A 63-year-old Savannah man died after hitting a utility pole with his car in the town of Conquest Saturday.
Gary C. Sigl, of 3673 Slyburg Road, had apparently dropped off a friend in Cato just before crashing on Bush Hill Road at about 9:47 p.m., according to Cayuga County Sheriff's deputies. There was no one else in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Deputies said Sigl may have been driving home from an event at the Weedsport Rod and Gun Club. He was wearing a seat belt but suffered severe upper body trauma, Lt. Joseph J. Weeks said. As of Sunday, investigators are unaware of any hazardous conditions that may have existed.

Sigl was pronounced dead at Auburn Memorial Hospital. Deputies are waiting for autopsy results from the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office to determine if alcohol was a factor in the accident.

Those results are expected Monday. The investigation is ongoing.

" hey grumpygram - why don't you read the article and what taxpaper 1 wrote and get off my back? I live on a rural road - grew up on one too - I know how they are. But if the article did not say or imply that speed was an issue - then you and all your gray hair friends need to get off the issue of speed for this poor guy who died. "

" Hey, readitagain, come sit on my porch and watch what REALLY goes on with rural roads...this road doesn't even have a centerline stripe, but we are buried in 10wheelers and semis whenever the on- going Rt. 370 construction comes to life and we're a shortcut for the Syracuse- bound so commute time is really scary! Who knows what this guy was doing but if you're on a back road, be cafeful... "

" come on now, he hit a tree and died from severe upper body trauma depsite wearing a seatbelt! That means speed had to be a factor! "

" Where does it say in this article that speed played any role in this car fatality? He was probably driving slow because he was 63 and that's what they do. I think your out of the blue comments on speed on rural roads should be kept to yourself. That is an insult to this man and his family - as you are the only person who suggested speed. "

" When will people learn to slow down and be careful on rural roads? NTSHA studies show that more deadly crashes happen on rural roads than city streets. Slow down people, it may save your life! "
