Leah Hilliard hurled a two-hitter and didn't walk a single batter to lead Moravia over Trumansburg in a softball game on Wednesday.
The Blue Devils only had two hits themselves in the pitcher's duel, but they made the most of their opportunities. With one out in the fourth, Brandi O'Hara drew a walk and advanced all the way to the plate on three consecutive passed balls. In the sixth, Shealena Marnell reached first when a grounder to the pitcher was thrown wide to first base. After a sacrifice bunt, O'Hara smacked a single for the Blue Devils' first hit of the game, scoring Marnell. Cayla Wade singled in the next at-bat for the only other Moravia hit.
The Blue Devils were sharp in the field, especially Wade, who turned a key double play in the sixth inning. The senior shortstop fielded a ground ball cleanly, took it to second herself and fired a strike to first base. Also, catcher Angela Potter picked off a would-be base stealer at second base.
Moravia (10-6, 7-5 IAC, 5-4 Division III) is at Newfield for a doubleheader on Friday.

The Chiefs played flawless defense, recording 17 of the 18 outs behind rookie pitcher Natalia McNabb, who was brought up from junior varsity on Tuesday. It was McNabb's second appearance, a day after she earned the win in as the Chiefs topped Union Springs, 6-1. Usual starters Lianna May (blisters) and Julie Hewitt (hip) have both taken some time away from the pitcher's circle to get healthy for sectionals.
Southern Cayuga, led by Molly Osterhoudt's triple, had eight hits total but stranded eight runners on base.
“We couldn't string our hits together,” said Chiefs coach Dave Hewitt, whose team is ranked 11th in Class C. “That was the key. They just weren't timely hits.”
The loss to the Crusaders, who are ranked 15th in Class B, marks the third time the Chiefs have fallen all year - all to Class B teams.
