MORAVIA - When runners get on base, the Moravia baseball team usually doesn't have much trouble driving them in.
That wasn't the case Wednesday.
The Blue Devils' potent lineup struggled to come up with big late-game hits and left 11 runners on base, including seven in scoring position, in a 6-5 loss to Trumansburg at Ettinger Field.
“(Trumansburg) had some timely hitting and we didn't get hits when we needed them,” Moravia coach Rich Valentino said.
The Blue Devils (10-6) had at least two baserunners in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings without scoring a single run. They left the bases loaded in the fifth.
“We got some hits, they just didn't come at the right time,” center fielder Jake Wood said. “Even my two hits were with nobody on base.”
Trumansburg lefty starter Ben Robertson kept Moravia off-balance by going off-speed. He pitched a complete game, struck out eight and scattered eight hits.
The Blue Devils did a bulk of their damage in the second inning. Trailing 2-0, Mike Drake walked with the bases loaded and Justin Stanton followed that up with a two-run double that hopped over the outfield wall. But Robertson was able to hold Moravia to just three runs in the inning by striking out Dustin LeFave and getting Wood to fly out to end the inning and the threat.
“That was the turning point right there,” Valentino said. “We score three quick runs then (Robertson) shuts us down. We could have broken their back right there.”
Moravia added two more runs in the seventh on a two-run homer by A. J. Rouse but Robertson went on to strike out the side to secure the victory.
Justin Stanton pitched five innings for the Blue Devils, allowed 10 hits and gave up four earned runs while striking out seven. Greg Langtry pitched a perfect two innings of relief.
Wood went 2-for-3 and Rouse went 2-for-4 for the Blue Devils.
