MARCELLUS - Colleen Ryan might be a permanent fixture in the New York State record books, but it was Gina Cardarelli who stole the show at Marcellus Park on Wednesday.
Most of the crowd came to see the Jordan-Elbridge pitcher break the state strikeout record against Marcellus, but the Mustang sophomore impressed the crowd by shutting down the Eagles offense en route to a 4-0 win.
“It was fantastic,” Marcellus coach Lisa MacLachlan said. “We haven't beaten them since a sectional game when my seniors were freshman. It was a much needed win for us. We've been right there in so many games and kept falling short, but our pitcher did an awesome job today.”
Ryan fanned Amy Sniffen in the top of the fourth for her 1,279th strikeout of her career, edging Sarah Reed, who set the state record at 1,278 for Jamesville-Dewitt in 2004. Marcellus tried unsuccessfully to keep Ryan from striking out enough batters to break the record by attempting a bunt almost every trip to the plate. The Eagles' senior fanned two batters each in the first, second and fourth innings.
“They were bunting it just to try and put it in play so I couldn't get a strikeout,” Ryan said. “I threw fastballs a lot because they're harder to bunt.”
Cardarelli earned the win by throwing 10 strikeouts of her own through seven innings, including three apiece in the third and seventh. After steady hitting in the first two games this week, the Eagles' bats went quiet, scattering only four hits.
“They were quiet today, which is unlike them, but (Cardarelli) was really good,” Eagles coach Joe Ryan said. “Marcellus has a really bright future. We'll have to get it together and just focus on sectionals.”
After a scoreless game through 4.5 innings, Jordan-Elbridge sophomore Erica Peterson replaced Ryan in the circle. One of two team errors and a Cardarelli double in the fifth led to the Mustangs' first run. Two more hits on top of two walks and another infield error in the sixth gave the Mustangs three more runs. Cardarelli earned two of Marcellus' five hits.
Peterson earned the first loss of her career, but the Eagles (11-2) look to regroup on their first day without a game in a week before hosting Solvay on Friday.
With the much talked-about record out of the way, the Eagles standout shooter has only two more things that she wants to concern herself with on the softball field before she graduates in June.
“We're going to get Erica some time and get ready for sectionals - that's our main goal right now,” Colleen said. “I just want to enjoy the rest of my senior year. I love being with these girls, I'm going to miss all of it and even all the teams we play.”
