Johnny Grant celebrates 84th b-day with friends
Hollywood's honorary mayor, Johnny Grant, celebrated his 84th birthday Wednesday surrounded by Tinseltown legends.
Mickey Rooney, Angie Dickinson and Mamie Van Doren were among those who turned out to fete Grant at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, where the first Academy Awards were presented in 1929, and where Grant lives.
Rooney lauded Grant's longtime service with the United Services Organization and his many contributions to the Hollywood community, calling him “a man who's practically seen it all.”
Buzz Aldrin also attended the luncheon celebration, as did several uniformed service members. Among them was Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton, who said he saw Grant's USO Christmas show while serving in Vietnam.
Messner says doctors have done all they can
Former televangelist Tammy Faye Messner said doctors have stopped treating her cancer and that her weight has dropped to 65 pounds.
In a letter posted Tuesday on her Web site, Messner thanked her “faithful friends” for sending her flowers, cards and gifts as she battles cancer for a third time. The 65-year-old Charlotte resident was first diagnosed with colon cancer in 1996, and she announced in 2004 that the disease had spread to her lungs.
“The doctors have stopped trying to treat the cancer and so now it's up to God and my faith. And that's enough!” she wrote.
Messner said her daughter and her daughter's friends were taking care of her while her husband, Roe Messner, builds churches.
He had no comment on his wife's condition, said a woman who answered the phone Wednesday at his business.
McBride issues stalker with order of protection
Martina McBride has received an order of protection against a man charged with stalking her.
Ricky D. Fissel, 42, is charged with stalking the 40-year-old country singer after he came to her home twice in early April.
McBride's husband, John McBride, said in court papers that Fissel came to the door around 10 p.m. on April 1 and asked if the singer was home.
He told the man to get off the property, but Fissel returned a week later around 9:15 p.m. to ask him “who lives here?” before speeding off.
After John McBride identified Fissel in a photo lineup, a search at Fissel's home revealed a newspaper article with Martina McBride's photo circled with hearts drawn around it, the legal statement said.
