The Auburn Chamber Orchestra will close its 21st season with a special concert this weekend.
Well-traveled violinist Leung Chun-Chim will lead the ensemble as guest conductor in an evening performance Friday. The appearance by “David” Leung, a doctoral candidate at the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, marks the end of an atypical year for the orchestra.
“This year not only did we get a guest conductor for the first time, but we tried some other venues as well,” said Mary Riley, a member of the ACO board of directors. “It's been an experimental year for us, but it's worked out well.”
The 41-member orchestra performed at the First United Methodist Church to help mark the congregation's 50th anniversary in March. Last fall, First Presbyterian Church on South Street also hosted a performance.
“It's worked out so well, we may do it in the future,” Riley said. “The board is pleased with the response of the performers.”
Friday will see the volunteer ensemble return to the historic Willard Memorial Chapel for the Spring Concert with Leung.
“Each person is different in the way they conduct and the way they interact with the orchestra,” Riley said.
Leung, a Hong Kong native, has performed in Japan, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Italy, France, Spain, Austria, the U.S. and the United Kingdom. His career credits include an ongoing stint as the an assistant conductor of the Brighton Symphony Orchestra, Rochester.
Leung currently studies under Mikhail Kopelman, former leader of the Borodin and Tokyo string quartets. His awards and scholarships include the Bloomberg Scholarship, the Inverstec Music Prize, Standard Chartered Community Foundation Scholarship, Guinness Flight Music Prize, Soong Ching Ling Children's Palace Scholarship, St. David Lodge Music Award and Ruggiero Ricci Violin Performance Merit Award.
The orchestra will also perform a composition by Auburn High School senior and ACO member Kris Kooi. The Spring Concert will be the last until the orchestra reconvenes in the fall for season No. 22.
