CAMILLUS - A 65-year-old golfer drowned Tuesday in the pond of a country club in suburban Syracuse, apparently while trying to retrieve his golf ball, police said.
Peter Bancheri, of Geddes, was golfing alone at the Pine Grove Country Club when he fell into an 8-foot-deep pond, said Camillus Police Chief Tom Winn. Bancheri was found by a passing driver about 12:30 p.m.
The driver stopped and pulled Bancheri from the water and performed CPR until an ambulance arrived.
Bancheri was taken to Community General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Winn said.
A six-year member of the club, Bancheri was secretary of the senior golf league, said country club co-owner Frank Szczech.
“Pete was a real nice guy,” Szczech said. “He was a good friend.”
