Taxpayers can't keep footing bill for council's sake

Wednesday, May 9, 2007 9:54 AM EDT

What is our city manager thinking? No wonder he hasn't bought a house yet.
He probably can't afford the taxes.

They have already notified us that taxes are going up, what else is new? At least that would be once a year, but raising water and sewer rates that we pay four times a year - it is getting so we can't afford a glass of water.

The water rates went up three times last year.

Enough is enough! We used to pay a sewer tax with our yearly taxes and they were affordable, but now sewer taxes are enormous. We even pay tax on water that doesn't even go in the sewer.

Now there is talk about giving our mayor and councilors a raise. For what?

Election inspectors took a $30 pay cut, but you want to raise your own pay. Get real.

As for the trash, why not leave it as it is? If all you have to do is sit around trying to think up ways to stick it to the taxpayer, give it a rest.

So far, I think you made a big mistake when you hired our new city manager.

He thinks we are made of money. He should be trying to find ways to reduce taxes, not raise all the ones we already have.

It is probably cheaper to live in a hotel than own property in Auburn.

" The new city manager is appling proven measures use in other communities to aid Auburn's needs. This is the bottom fact. "

" Congradulations for moving here two years ago, your family of four moved in and probably in the past two years a hundred moved out. And probably most of them moved south. I've lived in Auburn for sixty years and been paying taxes for almost forty years, nothing has changed in forty years and nothing will change in another forty. If they did somthing to improve the city I wouldn't complain. "

" It amazes me how quickly Auburnians become judgmental and prejudicial, without finding out the facts. Did you ever think to ask Mr. Palesh about his personal quest for an appropriately sized home for his family? Obviously not. Have you spoken personally with him about his reasons and his approach to our city's problems? Did you stop to consider the price for water, sewer, and garbage pickup services in other communities across the nation, and how such fees are MUCH higher in other areas? I moved here two years ago, and was amazed at how low the water rates are, and that the amount of garbage one can set out at a time is unlimited. My family of four is spending less than half in base rates for these services than we did in West Virginia, Virginia, or in the western states. Did you consider the number of hours the councilmen and the mayor spend in service to the city, then divide that number into their pay? How can you then say they are not due a raise? Your knee-jerk reactionism, and that of so many others who frequent these forums, simply demonstrates your significant willingness to jump to conclusions without considering all facts, all views, and all potentials. Hard decisions must be made, and significant change must be brought about, in order to rectify the problems. What, did you think all this could happen somehow without it having any affect on you? Thank God -- or whatever being you thank, even yourselves if you're an atheist -- that Mark Palesh has the insight, the intelligence, the critical thinking skills, and the fortitude necessary to get this city onto the right track!
