Morgan is the top choice for board

By Judy Ducayne

The Auburn school district just sent out its budget/school board candidates mailer for the May 15 election. I get a call inquiring why Jerry Morgan's name and picture isn't included, so I begin my next column here.
According to the mailer, Jerry Morgan never submitted a picture and biography of himself to the school district at the time of printing. Instead of listing him as a school board candidate who did not submit, they just left him out altogether. Sound strange? Well it is.

How in the world can they justify leaving out a legitimate candidate on their official mailing? These political games are unbelievable. Why wouldn't they just list his name and say photo and biography not available?

So that brings us to whom we should vote for to serve on school board.

For those of you who are planning on “bullet” voting (which means you only plan to vote for one person), my choice would be Morgan for many reasons. Morgan is truly a citizens' watchdog who understands budget figures and takes the time to learn about things he doesn't understand. He really does care about the education our children are getting or not getting. He has had firsthand experience after serving on the Auburn school board once before. This means he understands how to work through the political maneuvering and red tape that frequently gets in the way of getting things done for the taxpayers.

Morgan has shown nothing but dedication and isn't afraid to ask hard questions. He sees the wasteful spending taking place, like replacing two sheds that are 10x10 at a whopping $68,000 each. Why weren't they properly maintained in the first place? There are trees growing up through the vents on one of them.

The bleachers at the high school are being replaced (the old ones work just fine) for more than $300,000.

And then there is turf. Morgan understands that we, the voters, already said “no” to turf and plans to back us up.

See, Mr. Morgan knows that all this frivolous spending takes away from our children's education and that's the real job of the school board - safeguarding our children's education.

Instead, they have put their hands into everything BUT educating our children. Jerry said, “If your door falls off a hinge you don't buy a new door, you just fix it.” Morgan is an ideal school board candidate who vows to watch out for us taxpayers and still offer our children the best education anyone can ever give.

" I vote for jerry too.. how come the other candidates aren't mentioning all these wasted dollars? Why aren't they cutting corners? Do they agree with with this shed price nonsense? I am sure they are reading these posts--where are their answers? Many may condemn Jerry for always bringing this stuff up-but if he didn't who on the board would? One shed alone price-wise seems fitting for a homeless couple and a child to live in! Sounds like they are just interested in getting voted for and covering up all this wasted money that the kids need for education NOT decoration!! "

I may return for family get togethers and things of that nature, but I will never live in this area again! I am glad to see that you are doing well (and saving money) elsewhere. Take care and good-luck to you! "

" To the person that called me an idiot... Ahh, name calling, that's what people do when they don't have anything intelligent to say, correct? And you're an expert on those bleachers because of ...? There's more wrong with them than you've mentioned. Yes, they were repaired two years ago, and it seems you're suggesting that we repair them every two years? Talk about wasting taxpayer money! "

" Those bleachers were re-furbished just a few years back. The mechanism that drives the bleachers in and out need to be repaired. Now imagine spending 300 grand on that and another 300 grand on a elevator, and another 176 grand on storage sheds how much would be left over for raises? how much is left over for education? Oh thats right, it is john Q public, they have deep pockets, we can have our cake and eat it too. "

Entering its 19th year of the program, the County School System is seeking to continue the phenominal growth in the program over the past four years. The 180,435 books sold in 2006 represented an increase of nearly 8,000 books over the 2005 sales total. The school district has averaged increases of 10,000 books per year over the past four years.do the math 180,435 x $10.00= $1,804,350 "

" For the County, the net result of the first, Democrat-favored plan would be $10.1 million in new state money for the coming fiscal year. That is about $6.8 million more than the $3.3 million that county schools would have received under the goveners original "schools first" education plan, which relies on a 40-cents-per-pack increase in cigarette taxes for funding "

glad to have moved wrote on May 11, 2007 11:08 PM:

" living it up so you are a slumlord I see. Schools here are funded buy the state. First all lottery revenue goes to the schools. Children who carry a b average also get a scholarship towards a in state univeristy. Also cigarette tax goes to fund the schools. When school starts at the beginning of the year There is a 25.00 supply fee. This fee is only charger to people with children in school. And lower income people dont pay at all. "

" "glad to have moved" do your research before you speak. Florida does not pay income tax either, nor is our state tax as high as most states. And just for the record your salary doesn't equat to mine nor does the value of your home, I own rental properties worth more. Again I love Auburn, it's where I grew up and continue to visit because it holds great memories and has great people. "

glad to have moved wrote on May 10, 2007 10:53 PM:

" living it up...you cant be too smart you are still there paying all those taxes.I can bet my salary is more than yours. Plus I dont pay a state income tax.Or school taxes on my property. So you see I could make 50,000 which is half and still have more than you. Reason being im not forking it out in taxes. All we pay are county taxes. which are 700 dollars on a 190,000 home "

Living it up wrote on May 10, 2007 2:48 PM:

" "Glad to have moved" what did you do move 20 miles out of town? If you're so glad to be gone why do you read the citizen and better yet send in comments. Your life must have greatly improved since you left because your response made you sound like a complete moron. I can only say the great people of Auburn should be very greatful you left, they probably would have given you a going away party had you told them in advance. Please don't blame your lack of education on the Auburn schools, you see you had to show up and pay attention to learn. I was educated in Auburn and I can promise you that my salary shows that I did show up and did pay attention. "

" Judy and Jerry make a good pair. Their whole platform consists of worrying about taxes with the parsimonious zeal of Ebeneezer Scrooge. Look, "we, the voters, already said no" to Jerry Morgan so why doesn't Judy back us up? Btw, Judy, Indians already obey our laws, the laws that pertain to them, that is. The trouble with this system is that we want to change them again everytime it becomes inconveniantfor us to abide by obey our own laws. Americans have lost their own sovreignty to a corrupt government filled with bought politicians who bleed them to death and give all the breaks to corporations. Now Americans are jealous that an almost extinct native population can get financial breaks that they can't (no great principles at stake with Judy. All she worries about is taxes and other people's sexual behavior). Americans are eager to add one final insult to a legacy of extermination, disenfranchisement and demoralization. How hypocritical is it to treat a people like second class citizens for centuries and then turn around and snuff out what remains of their identity and self-determination in the name of equality? "

" We, the voters, already said NO once to Mr. Morgan for the school board. How can you be in favor of his running again, yet so outraged at the idea of a second vote on turf. Just the start of your hypocrisy. Mr. Morgan is clearly a person who does not value education, whose sole focus is on the bottom line. His recent letter criticizing the current board for the drop in enrollment is just one example of his not understanding the issues -- enrollment is declining all over upstate because people are moving away. That can, in NO way, be attributed to our school board. I want someone with an education, someone who values education, someone who can help prepare our children for life in teh 21st century, on the school board. Not an ill-educated, loudmouth who does nothing but criticize. "
