MORAVIA -- Six Moravia Central School District board candidates were in the hot seat Wednesday night during a candidate's forum that sought their views about improving the weight problems of the student body, what place creationism and sex education have in the curriculum and if the tight parking situation would ever improve.
Three incumbents are up for reelection, including Anne M. Haessner, who is seeking a fourth term, Douglas Hart, who is seeking a third term, and Joseph Lorah, who is seeking a third term. Challengers include Sherri Bancroft, Steven Fland and Leigh Hess. Terms last three years.
Bancroft, who has a 13-year-old son enrolled in the district, and who graduated from Moravia, said she is running to ensure that students receive the best education possible. She also promised she would be available and accessible to community concerns.
"I would be more than willing to listen," Bancroft said.
Fland said he is well prepared to serve after teaching biology for more than 35 years in Moravia and attending more than 90 percent of school board meetings over the last 10 years. He said he would continue that level of involvement and maximize the support the community expressed by voting in favor of a $27.5 million building project that will create a new bus garage, upgrade both school buildings and built a fitness center at the high school.
