The Union Springs softball team made the most of its last chances.
The Wolves were down 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh, but with two runners on and two outs, Jessica Kneaskern belted a home run to tie the game. With the next at-bat, Kelly Pinckney roped another home run to win the game for Union Springs, 5-4 over Lansing on Monday.
Amanda Forney also had two hits and with four hits and seven strikeouts, Jillian Thomas got the win after pitching a complete game.
Union Springs (7-7) hosts Southern Cayuga today.
Moravia 12, Marathon 5
Winning pitcher Leah Hilliard helped her own cause with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with a double, a triple and four RBIs. In the pitcher's circle, Hilliard scattered 10 hits and allowed one walk while fanning eight.
Haley Potter was 3-for-5 with three RBIs, and Angela Potter added a pair of doubles and three RBIs for the Blue Devils, who scored all their runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
Moravia (9-6 overall, 6-5 IAC, 5-4 Div. III) host Trumansburg Wednesday.
Southern Cayuga 9, Groton 4
Groton jumped out to an early lead, but Julie Hewitt, Traci Hewitt, Lianna May and Khalia Clemons broke the game open with key hits in a seven-run third inning for the Chiefs put the game out of reach.
Julie Hewitt returned to the pitcher's circle in the fourth inning and struck out seven while allowing only one base runner on a walk.
Lindsey Doeing had three hits, Julie Hewitt had two hits, Traci Hewitt had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs, and May had a pair of hits (double). Molly Osterhoudt had a strong defensive game.
The Chiefs (13-2 overall, 9-2 IAC, 7-1 Div. III) play at Union Springs today.
Cazenovia 8, Skaneateles 4
Six errors in the first two innings helped Cazenovia score seven quick runs - four unearned - and Skaneateles never recovered.
Kara Buehler was 3-for-3 with a triple, a run, two stolen bases and two RBIs, Kate Driscoll added a hit and two runs, and Alex Hughes had a hit as well.
In the pitcher's circle, Hughes allowed eight hits and four earned runs, with three strikeouts and no walks.
The Lakers play at CBA Wednesday.
Cicero-North Syracuse 11, Auburn 3
The defending state champions got out to a fast start against the Maroons, who gave up 10 runs in the first two innings. After that, though, Brittney Babcock shut down the Northstars, allowing only six hits in the final five innings. The Maroons outscored C-NS 3-1 in that span.
Kristy Piwinski had two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs. Amanda Daum had two hits, and Shannon McCormick, Sara Doan and Sarah Green each had a hit. Doan scored on a wild pitch.
The Maroons (4-8) host Rome Free Academy Wednesday.
Cato-Meridian 19, Port Byron 12
Cato-Meridian collected six runs in the second and fourth innings, and Amy Thomas got the win for the Blue Devils, pitching four innings. Nicole Aylesworth roped four hits and had three RBIs for Cato-Meridian, Rachel VanNorstrand had three RBIs on two hits, Ashley Thomas had four hits, including her fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot. Amber Grader had two hits and as many RBIs, and Sabrina O'Brien went 4-for-4, with a triple and four RBIs.
For the Panthers, Alison Short led with a home run and two RBIs.
Cato-Meridian 9, Hannibal 4
Amy Thomas earned the win in the pitcher's circle, and also hit a home run for the Blue Devils. Brandilyn Townsend was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Bishop Grimes 12, Cato-Meridian 10
Amy Thomas and Brandilyn Townsend each hit triples for Cato-Meridian, and Rachel VanNorstrand was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
