Hits & Misses

HIT: To the $300,000 in annual funding Unity House of Cayuga County has secured to expand its residential program for people with disabilities.
This tremendous program helps people integrate into the community by providing supportive housing. The new grant will allow it to serve four more people, bringing the total served by the Unity House Cayuga County Independent Residential Alternative program to 30.

Unity House has done terrific work to develop this program. The state award from the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities is proof of that.

MISS: The Jordan-Elbridge community is mourning the death of a teenager in an automobile accident over the weekend.

Authorities said Richard J. Wilson, 18, of Elbridge was killed when he crashed his sedan while driving on Otisco Valley Road just south of Route 174 in Marcellus Saturday morning.

HIT: To the Moravia High School baseball team, which captured its fifth straight Cayuga County Baseball Tournament title over the weekend.

Such success against other local teams year after year is a reflection of a well-built program. The coaches and players should be proud.

HIT: To the annual NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet, held last week at the Springside Inn in Fleming.

This was the 39th year for this event, which among other things celebrates local students who show promise. It's always great to see the range of community leaders who support the banquet, which is the major fundraiser for the local NAACP branch.

MISS: To the slow start in 2007 for the local housing market.

New York State Association of Realtors data shows sales volume has been down this year compared with last, though prices are higher. Local agents are hopeful better weather will help turn things around.

" Cripes...talk about a feeding frenzy on state and federal coffers. This city needs private enterprise. Between county and city jobs and non-profits there isn't much else. Someone better start attracting new businesses sooner than later. Countywide it needs to be the #1 priority. "

" Let me get this straight. $300,000 was given to the unity house for disabled people. 1.2 Million dollars was given to Bartolotta so he can make upscale condos for his personal benefit. Does anyone see the disparity here? "
