Sleepy teens should take tough classes after lunch

Tuesday, May 8, 2007 11:44 AM EDT

Fact: Young teenagers walk upright and look as though they are awake in the early hours of the day, when in fact they are still mentally sleeping. Several studies have shown that students get less sleep on school nights due to stress and worries related to school pressures and exams.
Fact: Schools want their student body to get great grades so they look like great schools.

Idea: All students drug free including ADD/ADDH drugs, with a 75 or less average would be scheduled with art, music, gym, mind-stimulating curriculum and less mind-concentrating classes prior to lunch.

Lunch would include foods that directly target brain productivity, such as vegetables, greens and omega 3. And of course limiting the intake of additives and preservatives. After lunch, they should be awake for math, science, social studies and English.

Prediction: 10 to 20 percent higher grades for all the sleep-walking students, which would make the school really look good.

" Has anyone explained to the people doing these ridiculous studies about students and sleep that in the "real world" you have to get up for work, most of the time in the morning, and be prepared to function when you get there. As adults in the workforce, we don't have the luxury of waiting for our brains to wake up. We are not doing kids any favors by accomodating their lazy, self-indulgent lifestyles. Wake up, grow up and take responsibility for yourselves!!!! "

" I think that if kids are not getting enough sleep, they should do what I did when I was there age and catch up on it during class. Who needs all that learning crap anyhow? "

" Geez, Who is the parent here? My kids are all grown up. When they all where in school. They had a set bed time during the school week. As they became older and in High School. The time became later. Then removed during the Jr Sr years. The funny thing even as Jr and Sr's they still went to bed early. It is IM'ing texting and video games that keeps kids up late. Because "parents" allow it. "

" If I remember correctly, I was always more tired after lunch when I was in school. I did better in the subjects that were first thing in the morning (math, science etc..) I was glad to have gym and art or whatever in the afternoon!! Advice: make your child go to bed earlier if they are that tired in the morning!! Parents these days are so worried that their kid will not like them if they lay down the law.. well guess what, as a parent it is our job! Parent first, friend second!! Your child will appreciate that down the road!! Kids want to do everything.. but have proven that they can not handle it all.. school, work, sports, friends, and whatever responsibilities they have at home! We as parents need to priortize for them based on what we feel is most important.. "

" Give me a break! I think it's funny that some parents are in denial! You are the adult- homework, healthy meals, and appropriate bed times is a responsibilty of the adult! Kids need to be taught what comes first, second etc.. kids that are brought up correctly do not have a problem with the school day.. they can funtion just fine.. yeah come Friday evening they may be tired.. but that is what weekends are for!! " Most kids do not get enough sleep do to irrisponsible parents who allow there children to be on the computer IM - ing there friends until all hours of the night, or allowing them phones to use until there hearts desire! Kids rush through their homework, and there study time to do the thing's they want to do.. and good food choices start at home.. a kid that is used to eating an apple for a snack instead of an entire bag of chips is more inclined to choose the healthy foods in school as well! I love how some people think they know what is best for other people's children.. My suggestion- take the computer's and the televisions out of kids bedrooms.. cut phone time off at 8pm.. make your child go to bed between 9 and 10pm, wake your child up early enough that they can sit down to a healthy breakfast and send your child to school prepared for what the school day holds.. work, study, tests, etc.. "

" Students get less sleep on school nights because of jobs, sports, computers, socializing & friends. Please, don't insult us with the "stresses over school" stuff. If high school students need more sleep then they should have parents who require a bedtime of no later than 9pm if they have to get up at 6am. Parents should also see to it that studying is done nightly and projects are started well before deadlines rather than rushing the night before the test or project is due. I can just see the schools providing organic lunches. That will happen real soon I'm sure. Kids will either not eat or bring what they want from home. As for being drug free, obviously a good idea, except for the ADHD & ADD meds. In most cases they are prescribed so the students CAN concentrate, focus & learn better. They also have proven to help the children sleep better at night. Those drugs are not for all kids but those that need them should have them. "
