No. 16 Colgate (11-5) outscored No. 19 Syracuse, 8-2, in the second half on its way to a 12-5 victory in the Orange's season finale on Saturday, at the Carrier Dome. The Raiders tallied the first four goals of the fourth quarter and outscored SU 6-1 in the final period to seal the win.
Colgate asserted itself at the start of the third quarter and got goals from Jeff Hiller and Kevin Colleluori to increase its margin to 6-3 before junior Mike MacDonald's sixth goal of the season cut the Raiders' lead to 6-4 heading into the final stanza. The Raiders outshot Syracuse 11-5 in the third period and kept up its momentum, reeling off four scores in the first nine minutes of the fourth, including consecutive tallies by Patriot League Player of the Year Brandon Corp, to build a 10-4 advantage.
After a goal by sophomore Greg Niewieroski ended the run, Colleluori scored his second and third goals of the afternoon to produce the final score.
The victory was Colgate's first win in the Dome in four tries and it ended the Orange's nine-game series winning streak.
Sophomore Matt Abbott, making his first career start in the midfield, led SU (5-8) and tied his career high with two goals. Junior Mike Leveille registered an assist on MacDonald's score to extend his consecutive game points streak to 39 and sophomore goaltender Peter Coluccini stopped 12 shots in the cage for SU, his fourth double-digit saves performance in the last five games.
Senior Jon Jerome won seven of his 11 faceoffs against the Raiders to finish the year with a .625 faceoff winning percentage, the sixth-best mark in the school history. Jerome, Greg Rommel, Dan Biegel, Craig Hammond and Steve Panarelli all played their final game in an SU uniform and were recognized in a brief Senior Day ceremony prior to faceoff. Senior Danny Brennan was also introduced, but he has petitioned the NCAA for an extra year of eligibility.
The Raiders got hat tricks from Corp, Colleluori, and Brendan Hurley in the contest. Corp also dished out an assist to finish with a game-high four points. Tim Harrington was solid in the cage for Colgate all day. He made 15 saves to help hold the Orange to a season-low five goals.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Hood 11, Wells 2
The top two seeds, College of Notre Dame and Hood College advanced to the Atlantic Women#,s Colleges Conference women#,s Lacrosse Championship game with semifinal victories today at Wells College.
Eleven-time defending AWCC champion Notre Dame defeated fourth-seeded Trinity 13-0 in the opening game, while Hood got by Wells 11-2.
Hood broke open a 1-0 game with less than 10 minutes to go in the first half with five goals in a 7:25 span, and out-scored the Express 5-2 in the second half to secure a place in the championship.
Wells held its own in the early going and had two point-blank chances to take the early lead from midfielder Claire Petersen. Her shots, however, were both turned aside by Blazer goalkeeper Lauren Lieb, who finished the contest with four saves.
Petersen would get Wells back into the game with a goal with 19:42 left to play from Melissa Vair, and Alice Hewes added an unassisted goal less than four minutes later for Wells#, final tally. Hood closed out the goal scoring on the day with a pair of goals with under 15 minutes to play.
Express goalkeeper Allie Inga stopped six shots in the game.
Wells College and Trinity will meet at 11 a.m. in the consolation game today, while CND and Hood meet for the AWCC title at 2 p.m.

The Express dropped a pair of games to end its season Saturday in the double-elimination Atlantic Women#,s Colleges Conference Softball Tournament hosted by Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pa.
The Express faced top-seeded Hood, a team that had defeated Wells 13-0 and 10-1 in five-inning games earlier in the year, in the opening contest of the tournament.
The Blazers earned two runs apiece in the bottom half of the third and fourth innings and another run in the sixth. The Express bats were held down by Blazer hurler Jamie Gardner who allowed only two hits and struck out 12.
Beth Cereo (Port Byron) threw six innings for the Express surrendering only eight hits in the game. Cereo and Brittney Seward earned the lone Express hits.
In the elimination game against Mary Baldwin College, which had beaten the Express by a combined run total of 42-4 in two previous games, Wells rolled to an 8-3 lead in the third inning. Stephanie Hills, Cereo, and Alarie Alghali each drove in runs in the first, with Cereo, Alghali, Taneeka Smith and Lindsey Williams each scoring runs in the third.
The Squirrels, however, scored twice in the bottom of the third to pull to within three runs, 8-5, and scored two in the fifth and two in the sixth to reclaim the lead, 9-8.
In the top of the seventh, the Express went down 1-2-3 falling one run short.
Cereo struck out seven batters in the game and helped out her cause with two hits. Hills had a team-high three hits and Seward added two.
Smith and Krystle Bouchard each were playing in their final game in a Wells College uniform.
