Voters asked to review propositions

Saturday, May 5, 2007 11:41 PM EDT

This year's annual vote asks Auburn Enlarged City School District residents to select seven choices in the voting booth. They include one proposition on the budget; one proposition on purchase of vehicles; one on a capital reserve fund; one on sale of land; and three to elect members of the board.
The proposition on the sale of land would permit the district to sell land it owns to residents on Fleming Street. Interested homeowners there could purchase the property if agreement can be reached between the buyers and district. Recently the district has sold properties along Garrow Street Extension with public approval voted three years ago. School districts cannot give away property, and the district has an obligation to maintain its own grounds.

Sale of the land is one possible resolution for the public's and Fleming Street homeowners' consideration. A capital reserve fund permits districts to pay for debt caused by capital improvement projects. Last fall voters approved renovations not to exceed $13,433,000.

A capital reserve, if approved, would allow the district to set aside funds for future payments tied only to construction or renovations endorsed by the public.

The proposition for purchase of vehicles would allow the district to replace busses, maintenance vehicles, and a mower. If approved, the district would receive state aid for the busses at a projected 70 percent of cost. Polls will be open in Auburn from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 15. Please make it a point to vote. Thank you.

John Plume

Superintendent of Auburn Enlarged City School District

" I have an issue with replacing bleachers due to a motor failure. Auburn Armature is a motor shop! Motors can be rewound over and over! What about replacement motors? Anyone ever hear of that? AAI employs almost 100 taxpayers and is right here! Maybe no one ever knew what AAI is/does, but wouldn'tcha think that this is a fiscally responsible alternative? Go get 'em Jerry! "

" thank-you jerry for changing mr.plumes words in to english! for those of us not directly involved it is sometimes hard to understand what the board is talking about--such as what are the capital improvement projects? JERRY I understand exactly what you said--sheds for 68thousand!!! What is planning on being stored in them? mowers and tools or GOLD? or is the Queen staying for a week or two? Jerry I also think if you continue to spell out the rest of the budget and hidden agendas you will most likely win a seat. "

" The sale of land along Garrow Street is totally different. If in fact the district cannot give the property away to the Fleming St residents then I would support selling the property to the residents for $1.00, (one dollar). I would question why the administration never started a dedicated fund for vehicle replacement. This needs to be done immediately. It would prevent the district from having to borrow money and paying interest. The other propositions are too vague, you think you are paying for a new roof because the district is telling you one is needed. However, buried n the proposition are other frivolous items that does not need to be there. This is why taxes are increasing even with record amounts of state aid. I am voting NO on the budget, and the propositions. John Plume can do better, this board can do better. Tax and spend is not a way to run a school district. The results are staring him in the face. "

" The people of Auburn need to realize what a fraud has been perpetuated by a man who is now fleeing the community to get away from the mess he created. It is time to send a message and vote NO across the board and NO to incumbancy. "

" I would like to address a few items conerning the letter to the editor written by John Plume. First of all I would like to address the vehicles he is asking the district to purchase. In the years he has led this district he has failed by not starting a dedicated transportation fund. There is no reason why this administration could not have planned for vehicle replacements. They could have budgeted monies in the budget this would save the taxpayers money in the long run because we would save on interest payments and indebtnes. It only makes sense to budget money for our vehicles, that way when one needed to be replaced, the district would have the money on hand. With zero debt. The other item of contention is the land the district is attempting to sell to the Fleming St residents. This land should not be an issue. Deed the property to the home owners. The district will recognize additional money from higher assessments. Plus it would be a good gesture as a good neighbor. Next I would like to address the districts failure to disclose the items you are being asked to approve. For example, $300,000 bleachers at Auburn High These are the same bleachers that were refurbished a few years back. There is nothing wrong with them. The motor needs some maintaince. Two 10X10 sheds are being replaced, at a cost of $68,000 each. You build homes for that kind of money not sheds. The propositions are extremely vague and extremely costly. Such as the turf issue again. I cannot support the propositions or the budget. Had this administration made simple repairs to the bleachers and to the sheds then that 3% tax hike they are asking for would not be an issue. The reason I am against the budget and the propositions is simple, when they spend money on items without a priority that in turn means we have less money to spend on educating our children. We cannot afford to continue to spend millions of dollars on wish lists, and ignore our childrens education. We need a superintendent that is willing to take this district in a different direction. Your support or non support on the propositions will determine the direction we are to go. They are willing to continue with the status quo if you let them. "
