As I sit writing this month's column, I'm reflecting on a day that started with rain and a chill in the air but ended with sun and warmth. That sums up our spring so far.
Spring break week ran the gamut from shoveling to sunscreen within the span of a few days, so that was a strange vacation time for those of us who stayed in good old New York. Nothing like having a snowball fight wearing shorts and flip flops. It's certainly nice to look at the green grass, budding trees and blooming flowers.
This past week, the elementary school was transformed into a big top with a visit from the National Circus Project. Students in grades K-5 enjoyed a week of fun activities with professional circus performers, and our fifth-graders took to the high school gym for their movie-themed circus. Circus week is a huge deal for our students and greatly anticipated; it's a time for the fifth-graders to be the stars of the show and perform their skills in front of their families and friends. A big round of applause to the Weedsport APT for funding, the great group of parents who planned extra fundraising events and circus details and the staff and students.
On April 27, the Weedsport Lions Club held its annual talent show, “Weedsport's Got Talent,” in the high school auditorium. The show, which is a fundraiser for high school scholarships, included “terrestrial baton twirler” (and district employee) Dawn Perrault; entertaining guitar numbers from Cindy Daly, Jim Putvin, Bob Deverall, Karen Cyr, Ernie Terpening and Dave Eno; energetic Irish dance numbers from The Baird Sisters of the Jordan-Elbridge area and an inspiring modern dance piece from Weedsport freshman Lauryn Bates; the always-beautiful voices of Marian Weeks and Marilou Everson; the mesmerizing harp/violin duo of Chris Molloy and Katie Hoff; magic by Wally “Waldo the Adequate” Meier (also the host of the show); wonderful comedy by “the mop lady” Penny Cosentino and the “Stella” crew from Port Byron (my apologies for not getting the full group name); music by local band Too Old 2 Rap, and a huge finish by guitarist and yodeler extraordinaire Betty Hitchcock. It was a fun night of family entertainment and something we look forward to each year.
I'd like to make a correction to last month's column, in which I inadvertently left out two contributors who helped to make the second annual “Out of Hibernation Celebration” a success: Ma & Pa Enterprises (otherwise known as the Peters') and Mayor Jean Saroodis. My apologies for omitting your names, and we all thank you for your generous donations.
€ APT meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, in the high school board room. Stop in and see all the things APT does for our school district. At 7:30 p.m. that evening, the district budget hearing will also be held at the high school. The annual APT dance recital will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 11, in the high school auditorium, showcasing students of Jill O'Hearn. It's always fun to see the littlest ballerinas with their sparkly costumes and bright red lipstick. Flowers and refreshments will be available at the show. Come early for great seats, and watch out for proud grandmas with cameras.
€ The Elementary Art and Music Festival for third through fifth grades will be held at the high school beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 15. While you're there, don't forget to vote on the district budget; polls are open from noon until 9 p.m.
€ Be sure to make plans to attend Weedsport's Memorial Day parade and ceremonies at 9 a.m. Monday, May 28. The parade travels from the elementary school through Centennial Street, along North/South Seneca Street (Route 34) and ends at the American Legion (on South Seneca Street across from St. Joseph's Church) with a touching patriotic program. A POW/MIA watch fire and ceremony will be held in the high school parking lot at 8 p.m.
Both of these Memorial Day events are a wonderful way for our community to show its gratitude to all who have so bravely and selflessly served our country and also provide memorable teaching moments for our children. These are the kinds of traditions that we should be honored to pass along. God bless America, and God bless our troops.
