Candlelight vigil will honor soldiers
A candlelight vigil will take place beginning at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 19, near the war monuments outside the Cayuga County Office Building on Genesee Street in Auburn.

The event, taking place on Armed Forces Day, will include guest speakers and is part of the national Operation Yellow Ribbon, a show of support for the U.S. armed services. Candles will be provided and balloons will be available for young children.

County jail houses total of 174 inmates

The Cayuga County Jail was housing 174 inmates as of Friday, the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office reported.

A total of 145 men and 17 women over the age of 19 are in custody. A total of nine male and three female minors between the ages of 16 to 18 are in custody.

One inmate is boarded in from another county, and 39 inmates are boarded in from federal custody. A total of 79 inmates have pending criminal matters and are of a pre-sentencing status, and 56 are serving a sentence. Eight are serving time related to parole violations. Two inmates are awaiting transfer to the custody of the state Department of Correctional Services.

The jail earned $130,490 in April by boarding inmates on behalf of other agencies.

County gets $1M in federal grant money

Cayuga County has been awarded a $1 million Community Development Block Grant for programs that provide affordable housing and create jobs through the expansion and retention of business, according to a news release from U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer.

The grant program, administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, provides funds to state and local governments to help develop viable urban communities by providing housing and expanding economic opportunities. The funds can be used for a variety of projects, such as infrastructure and community groups.

Residents must get permits for pools

Auburn residents have to obtain a building permit for the installation of a pool with at least 24 inches of water depth. Residents need a permit the first time the pool goes up, as long as following years the pool is in the same location. There is an one-time fee associated with the permit.

The yard must have a fence or barrier at least four feet high. Pools should have an alarm. Questions can be sent to the code enforcement office at 255-4111.

" Sounds like a good opportunity to work on your tan while holding up a stick of wax with a little flame that no one will be able to see in the DAYLIGHT! For crying out loud, can't we do anything right in this town? "
