Moravia's Anthony Canestaro follows through on his swing during the Blue Devils golf match against Trumansburg at Fillmore Golf Course in Moravia Wednesday.
And as the weather continues to improve, Fred Ott hopes they'll be closer.
The Moravia golf team continued its sectional quest Wednesday, hosting Trumansburg at Fillmore Golf Course. The Blue Devils turned in their second-best round of the season, but it wasn't enough as Trumansburg came out on top 210-223.
The win qualifies the Blue Raiders for team sectionals. The Blue Devils need a 215 to qualify, and their coach thinks it's a possibility.
“We've got a couple more chances,” Ott said. “If guys play their games, we'll have a good shot.”
Against Trumansburg, Moravia's top two golfers played like they have all season. Senior Ben Shields was the day's medalist, shooting a 37, while junior Anthony Canestaro turned in a 41.
Shields, a 6-handicap his junior season, is on pace to break the 5-handicap mark and qualify for individual sectionals.
“Ben's very consistent,” Ott said. “He hits his drives long and straight. His approach shots are good and his putting and short game have improved. He has a fluid and smooth swing. He doesn't get himself in a lot of trouble which is always good.”
Shields had a few high rounds early in the season but has consistently shot in the 30s of late. Since he plays in every match for Moravia, he'll have the opportunity to drop his worst two or three rounds, which will certainly improve his handicap.
“My swing feels pretty good right now,” Shields said. “Today was probably the best conditions we've played in. It's usually so windy. But every day it's something different to work on. I'm still working on my swing.”
Aside from Shields and Canestaro, the Blue Devils are quite young. On Wednesday, their top six included three freshman - Pat Mott, Jeff Alvord and Jake Hefferman.
Mott shot a 46, Jeff Alvord carded a 47, and Joe Alvord finished with a 52.
“These younger kids have a lot of potential,” Ott said. “We've just got to hold it together and work on consistency. We've had some really good scores, but in other matches we've struggled. I don't think we've shot what we're capable of shooting yet.”
Calab Blass led Trumansburg with a 39, Brian Butterfield and Max Kuehler shot a 41, Ben Dodge turned in a 42, and Tyler Kraus shot a 47.
Moravia gets another shot at the Blue Raiders today as the team travels to Trumansburg Golf Club.
“We played well today; I wish we could have thrown out the 52,” Ott said. “We're just looking to go there tomorrow and get better. Trumansburg is a tough course but you can go low there. It will be one of our better chances (to make sectionals).”
