Man unsucessful in getting restitution dropped

A Weedsport man who shot four shotgun blasts into the engine of a truck owned by a man dating his ex-girlfriend stopped paying restitution for the truck in 2006 -- shortly before he made a court argument that restitution should be dropped.
Lenny Ramsey, 35, unsuccessfully brought the motion to drop his $69 a month restitution before former Cayuga County Judge Peter Corning and current Cayuga County Judge Thomas Leone. On Thursday, Leone ordered Ramsey to renew restitution payments -- which are now $1,141 in arrears, according to Chief Assistant District Attorney Jon Budelmann.

Ramsey claimed the Kelley Blue Book value for the truck he damaged is lower that the $4,400 he will end up paying. Ramsey's restitution will now be closer to $100 per month.

After an argument with his ex-girlfriend and the shooting of the truck, Ramsey was in a 12-hour standoff with Cayuga and Tompkins county SWAT teams Jan. 4, 2003 during which he fired more than 20 rounds from his shotgun.

Ramsey was sentenced to six months in the Cayuga County Jail and probation by Corning in 2003. Leone restored Ramsey to probation.

" The last couple of days your paper has run stories on 2 local criminals, one being the Elardo woman and this on Ramsey. Elardo was whinning how it was her attorneys fault along with any body else she could blame. Now Ramsey cries oh I damaged this and cimmitted this crime, but I shouldn"t have to pay the restitution because its to much. Lock both there butts and throw away the key. "

" my facts aren't wrong - the incident occurred. And they aren't facts about the justice system. Just follow the paper, Joe. "

" Hey, this sounds like a Lifetime made for TV movie. Let's see shotgun-check, trailer-check, jealous ex-boyfriend-check, swat team-check, failure to pay resitution-check. Maybe we can get Richard Chamberlain, Cheryl Ladd & John Lithgow! "

" Well yes I do remember this, and your facts are wrong. Mr. Ramsey did not hold anyone hostage. He unfortunately made a rather large mistake, however he was jailed, ordered to pay restitution, and has remained on parole without violations. Lets think about this: If you got your facts wrong about the incident that actually did occur with Mr. Ramsey on Jan 2003, who is to say your facts about the justice system aren't wrong as well? "

" Does anyone other than me remember Lenny Ramsey baricading himself in his trailer and holding his girlfriend hostage a few years ago with a gun? Why is he on the streets again? He obviously has an anger management problem that is leading to some serious crimes with weapons. Aren't these warning signs of what will ultimately happen down the road? Why can someone get locked up for 15 years for handling or distributing drugs but the real serious criminals like Ramsey get slaps on the wrist and a free to do it again and again, until these is a fatal shooting? Our system of justice is not consistent and consequences are not severe when they should be, and are too severe when they shouldn't be. Get on the same page. "
