Inspiring moves

For some dancers at Absolute Dance this weekend's production, “Momentum,” could be their final local performance before being selected to join a professional dance company.
“Momentum,” the Auburn dance company's final show of the year, combines a variety of dancing into one production at Cayuga Community College Theater.

“The beautiful thing about our company is it's very diverse,” said Yvonne Villano-Hassett, artistic director for the center.

The show will exhibit a variety of dances from modern, African and lyrical to traditional ballet, tap and jazz routines.

Villano-Hassett said this professional production enables 13 dancers, both male and female, ages 16 to 23, to build their dance resumes.

“‘Momentum' is very different; it's not a dance recital. It's a lot bigger than that,” she said. “It's a big production for aspiring dancers.”

Choreographers from around the United States joined the Auburn company this year to create a show with a theme focusing on taking the next step in life.

“It's a celebration of the growth of our company and outreaching to other organizations to show how dance has the power to entertain and to heal,” Villano-Hassett said.

The director explained at a time when dancers begin to pursue professional dancing careers, this production highlights the inspiration that dancing can bring to all people.

“The theme celebrates us taking the next step in the dance profession,” she said.

“Momentum” is the fifth annual dance concert produced by this center. In 2002, Villano-Hassett founded the local company to create a professional environment for aspiring dancers. ADCII Dance Ensemble for dancers ages 12 and older will perform a guest appearance in the production.

“They're not only gaining experience, but inspiring people's lives,” Villano-Hassett said. “It goes beyond the recital; it's inspirational to everyone.”
