New Auburn superintendent must come from outside

Tuesday, May 1, 2007 10:46 AM EDT

It has come to my attention that the Auburn Board of Education is contemplating hiring the next superintendent before this year's election.
This is wrong for two very important reasons. First and foremost, the two incumbent board members that are up for re-election may not get re-elected to another term, as such, the victors in this year's election should have a voice in deciding who the next superintendent should be.

Secondly, I believe it is imperative that the board embark upon a new direction.

We will have a new superintendent, I believe that it is imperative we do a outside search. If this board hires a current sitting assistant superintendent, they will only be continuing the failed policies of John Plume.

If the policies of Plume were effective and if they were successful, the district would have recognized an increase in enrollment.

Instead we have just the opposite happening; people are leaving our area.

In spite of the millions of dollars we have pumped into our educational system, it is failing. In fact, Plume himself is leaving.

He refuses to stay here and pay the taxes that he has pushed upon us as being reasonable as the chief administrator of our school district.

We need to go in a different direction. We need new faces on that board. We need new policies, with a new agenda. I am running for a seat on Auburn's Board of Education. If you are dissatisfied with the direction this board has taken, then I am asking for your support.

Only with your support can changes be made.

" however I am so glad I chose to send my kids to a catholic school at least until high school age. The education was a better environment with smaller classrooms, uniforms so kids were all on the same playing field but unfortunately I still paid school taxes all those years as well so I had to be concerned with where those dollars went. There are so many issues with running a school system to begin with and I agree there needs to be new policies set in place for the public school system. "

" The proper way to fill Plumes position is to go through boces and conduct a search .If any current administrator is interested then he or she can apply through the boces search .Also a committee should be formed to include residents of the school district . "

" Normally I don't get into the politics of the school board, But I will have to say that I think many things need to be changed. I understand that yearly taxes go up and my paycheck does not, I basically wouldnt have a problem with them increasing A TAD if I saw that many kids and teachers who are deserving were to get the money! But what I see is that the leaders of the board recieve nice raises in their paychecks and yet I am purchasing toilet paper, sanitizer, and tissues for the class--which I am sure is nothing compared to what the teachers dish out of their own pockets! I struggle to buy supplies and school clothes and now all these extras that are no longer supplied by the school system. I don't get a raise every year to supply a graphing calculater yet it is demanded for class! I don't get a raise to pay for the gas to run to the bookstore for a book thats required but not purchased by the school.. WHO decided this MUST have list at the beginning of the year? WHY are these items not paid for by the taxes I pay? How many wasted hours have been spent on artificial turf? It was voted NO the first time--done --over with--lets get back to solving the small stuff.. Maybe kids are leaving school because there is nothing there to keep them there--maybe they can't afford a graphing calculater or a book to read?! Maybe the parents are fed up with all the TALK and NO ACTION of the school board?! Maybe we need a new members with new visions, and mostly with ACTIONS not words.. hmmm..alot to think about huh? "

" Mike Stearns and John Plume DID run this district into the ground. For years they have accused Morgan and his group of doing the very same thing they them selves did. Now they are trying to put a spin on their own ineptness. It wil not work Mr Stearns, you are responsible "

" I cant wait until they try to take insurance away from the Civil Servants of our community and then watch people complain because they do not have any quality teachers, policeman or, for that matter, anyone to pick up the trash. Stop beating on Civil Servants, or we are going to stop being so civil!!! "

" Thank you for your kind words Michael. However, your record speaks for itself. The policies you and your board have supported have failed Mike. Your record is a dismal failure. It is time we moved forward. In a new direction. I want to try success for once. "

" We cannot afford to pay insurance anymore. Skaneatales recognized this and acted accordingly. It is time the County, the City and the Schools followed suit. Kudos to the brave public servants of Skaneatales WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Fewer U.S. employers are offering health benefits, mostly because many new small employers have chosen not to pay for health insurance, the U.S. Government Accountability Office reported on Monday. ADVERTISEMENT The GAO found an 8 percentage point drop in the share of small employers offering benefits from 2001 to 2006 and said many employers that offer health benefits now make workers pay a higher share of out-of-pocket costs. Some also have begun offering consumer-directed health plans, which trade lower premiums for significantly higher deductibles, or mini-medical plans that provide more limited coverage at lower premiums, the GAO said. "While the share of large employers offering health benefits remained fairly constant between 2001 and 2006 at about 98 percent, the share of small employers (with 3-199 employees) offering them dropped from 68 percent to 60 percent," the GAO said in its report. "Health policy experts from one organization we interviewed told us this decline is likely due to new employers choosing not to offer coverage rather than existing employers dropping coverage," the GAO added. " Well now that we have heard from the "insiders" I want you to know that I agree with you Jerry, our school were placed on the states failure list for a reason, "FAILURE" I personally do not like paying more and more every year in taxes, and have more and more kids failing. John Plume and his puppets have made a mockery out of this district. I will not vote for any incumbent. Period! "

" Is it logical to blame the school board for a decrease in enrollment? Do you honestly think people move away from CNY (which has been going on for years all over upstate, not just in the Auburn school district) based on the policies of the school superintendent?! I do not believe our school system is failing. My children are getting, or have gotten, an excellent education in Auburn, and two out of the three have gone on to be accepted at, and later graduate from, very prestigious universities. I have every confidence that my third child will do the same. I pay attention to the quality of the education they have gotten in Auburn, and I am satisfied that my tax dollars have been spent wisely. I do not want someone who is uneducated himself in charge of my children's educations. Using the declining enrollment as an issue is an example of how this man is ready to latch on to anything he thinks will support his point, without really understanding the issues facing our school district. I will vote for the two incumbents, I think they've been doing a good job. "
