WEEDSPORT - Danny Johnson backed up his opening day victory at The Cayuga County Fair Speedway the best possible way - with another convincing 35-lap triumph Sunday night. This win was all the more impressive, as Johnson started 15th overall and stormed his way to the lead without the aid of a single caution slowing the action.
“I can't thank this team enough,” a jubilant Johnson said. “Troyer race cars, Kevlar engines, it's incredible to be running this good this early in the season.”
Johnson wasted little time on his march to the front of the field. While Ryan Bartlett set the early pace, Johnson used the high side of the 3/8-mile clay oval to pass his way to seventh spot by lap six. He was fifth just two laps later and moved into the runner-up slot on lap 13, a full 2.5 seconds behind leader Bartlett.
Johnson eradicated the deficit in five laps, sweeping by Bartlett on the inside groove.
“Bartlett was running up on the outside, so there wasn't room enough for me to get up alongside him,” Johnson said. “I went down to the bottom and the car stuck pretty good for me.”
Once in front, Johnson's only concern was lapped traffic, as he opened up a sizable lead over eventual runner-up Jimmy Phelps.
Early leader Bartlett came home with a solid third-place effort, holding off the fast-closing No. 121 of Joel Beyea. Auburn native Vinnie Vitale Jr. rounded out the top five finishers.
The first five racers across the line all were piloting Troyer race cars, a marked departure from recent history at CCFS, where Bicknell and Teo pro cars have dominated the competition.
Justin “T-Bone” Haers was sixth and the first Bicknell car across the wire. Rookie John Bellinger turned in a solid effort in the seven spot, with Derrick Podsiadlo eighth. Steve Paine and Butch Tittle completed the second five.
A total of 29 modifieds entered competition Sunday night, with more than 100 cars filling the pits from the five different divisions.
Jeremy Pitcher won the 25-lap sportsman feature, passing Chris Hile for the lead on the 19th lap. Hile hung on for second, ahead of his brother Rob Hile who finished in the show position. Tim Currier and Joe Williams rounded out the top five finishers.
Dave Mannise picked up his initial win of the 2007 season in the 15-lap street stock main, holding off Wolcott runner Nick Rizzo. Adam DePuy was third, with Jimmy Wallace fourth and Dave Marcuccilli fifth.
Don Henry Jr. won the 20-lap CNY Mini-Sprint main.
The Cayuga County Fair Speedway lies silent next week, as Rolling Wheels Raceway in Elbridge comes alive for their first action of the 2007 season, hosting a 60-lap Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series for big-block modifieds.
Race time is 5 p.m. with the gates opening at 3 p.m.
