Increase bed tax for sake of tourism

Legislators voted 7-6 in favor of increasing Cayuga County hotel occupancy tax from 3 percent to 5 percent. Due to the absence of two legislators the bill was ultimately defeated; an unfortunate blow to Cayuga County tourism.
With the 2006 U.S. Census showing a steady decline in population and consistent complaints that our area needs more jobs, it's puzzling that such a misfortune would be applauded. The county could stand to gain as much as $125,000 in additional revenue to apply toward promoting the region. The more money applied toward commercial tourism, the greater the receipts. It boils down to accessibility. People can't spend money on attractions that they don't know about. The Harriet Tubman Home and the William Seward House are frequent stops for school buses, but tourists don't make the trip to central New York to visit either landmark. In fact, tourists seem to skip Cayuga County altogether, which is unfortunate because the region has so much to offer.

As a resident, it's easy to say that there is “nothing to do” because we see these attractions on a daily basis. But the Cayuga Wine Trail is a great way for tourists to see the beauty of the Finger Lakes; and what better way to celebrate wine than fine dining? There are plenty of restaurants worth the drive and there are plenty of car, bus and limousine services available and willing to chauffeur. Boating, fishing and hunting is also available, but tourists looking for a rural excursion may struggle to plan such a trip.

In an “I know a guy who knows a guy” system, a market is being ignored. If tourism is to thrive, Cayuga County needs to invest heavily in online marketing. Remember that not everyone lives in a rural setting and New York City and Toronto are less than five hours away. A Web site that is easy to navigate with pre-determined vacation packages is an invaluable tool.

With the second lowest tourism budget in the Finger Lakes region, Cayuga County is forced to compete with more successful tourist areas like nearby Skaneateles. As a village of Onondaga County, Skaneateles hotel guests already pay a 5 percent occupancy tax on top of overnight room rates. By increasing our tax, we can better market our region to commercial tourism.

I encourage the community to support the legislation. Tourists help promote commercial investment outside of tourism by demonstrating to potential investors that Cayuga County is a desirable place to live year round; something that we as residents already know.

" There is a lot more to Cayuga County then Auburn. The problem is we need some way to promote the attractions in the regions. If we leave it up to these businesses, they will in turn lose profit or have to increase the price of their goods. Uncork NY does a great job promoting the wineries so why not have that organization on Cayuga County websites. Why not team up with other areas similar to Cayuga County and cross promote each other. I went to Lake George a few years ago and found that many people who live in that area look to vacation in areas like the Finger Lakes. I believe in this area but we have to come up with ideas and that work for us. "

" Chris - I am a professional tourist, I go somewhere new every 2-3 months. Some places I've found: Inner Harbor Baltimore MD, FL has so much to see that doesn't involve Disney, but yes I do love Mickey. I love NYC and DC. If you want to know some great golf courses I'd have to take out an add. The Finger Lakes wineries are becoming well known. Mix some of that wine and golf and you can attract yuppies from all over!!! "

" Typical, I am just trying to look from the eyes of the tourists coming in. As a resident, I am very proud of where I live and trying to do my part to promote growth. When thinking of tourism, you have to think like a tourist. What draws you to places that you go visit? Do you stay at a hotel with a beautiful view or one of run-down buildings? With all the grant and development money NY hands out, I am sure we could get a piece of it to either rehabilitate or tear down these eyesores. "

" Chris I agree wholeheartedly with beautifying Owasco Lake, that was my point. And RK not everyone takes a vacation to visit historical sites. Auburn is a quant little town that just needs a niche. It's relaxing and the majority of people are great. Yes it is deteriorating because the cost to restore the old beautiful homes is costly and the old factories are an eyesore and it's cheaper to build what they need rather than try to restore an old building. But the bottom line is Auburn is a great place and some of the people just can't see past their noses. "

" I am all for promoting Auburn and the Finger Lakes, and do it all the time. I do not think that it is something that needs to be done by taxpayers. Let these tourist attractions pay for their owned advertising. "

" Why would anybody want to visit Auburn and beside that pay a 5% occupancy tax,we have the Tubman and the Seward houses big deal,we have pot holes that swallow up your car, drive on grant ave. and take your life in your hands, have you seen washington, orchard and jefferson streets lately? drive up E. Genesee st. whats happen to the beautiful old homes? Stay on the arterial and get thur Auburn as fast as you can. "

" Typical, I take a lot of pride in where I live and do more then my part to promote and enhance the area I live in. The comment regarding Skaneateles was that they can make some raise in room charges because you have the rooms on the lake. People may choose Geneva or Skaneateles areas because of the lakes proximity. What we need to do is develop the beautiful Owasco lake area. "

" This is why Auburn will continue on the downslide. Take a look around people, you allowed something as ugly and stupid as the arterial to be put in but fight tourism. As for the lake in Skaneateles, did I miss something or did Owasco lake dry up, oh that's right you don't want a hotel there, I forget why change maybe. The Finger Lakes is a gorgeous place people, I know this because I do an extensive amount of traveling. Stop complaining and blaming everyone else, if you want Auburn to thrive take a chance and be a part of it. I am so tired of peoples unwillingness to take pride and ownership of Auburn. Face it you have no intentions of leaving so fix it!! "

Grant wrote on May 2, 2007 1:57 PM:

" You want to promote this region? I'm sure that NYS has some sort of grant to help counties promote themselves. Tell the Cayuga County tourism office to look into this. Raising taxes is not the answer. Tax money is already out there somewhere... why not take advantage of it. "

Chris - Throop wrote on May 2, 2007 8:09 AM:

" "You are wrong", you are way off on your comment. Tourism is needed for most areas especially ones such as ours. With the lakes, wineries, outdoor activities, the area needs to be promoted to sustain businesses and in turn keep jobs. It also gives the opportunity for outsiders to come to our area and maybe if they like it enough, they may consider moving here. But Carole, you cannot compare Skaneateles to Auburn. The view from their rooms is a lake and the view from ours is a prison. "

You are wrong on this one!! wrote on Apr 30, 2007 11:51 AM:

" Why do my family who come to visit me have to subsidize the advertising for the businesses in the area? Who cares if toursits come here? How many minimum wage jobs do we need? "
