Moravia wins pitcher's duel; Weedsport's Treat tosses no-hitter

Moravia' Greg Langtry and Union Springs' Caleb Lyndaker tossed a pair of two-hitters but it was the Blue Devils who won the pitcher's duel, 3-0 in baseball action Thursday at Moravia.
Justin Stanton came up with the big at-bat for Moravia, delivering a two-run single in the fifth inning. Jeremy Stewart drove in the other run on an infield fielder's choice.

Langtry finished with six strikeouts and six walks while Lyndaker had 12 strikeouts and just one walk.

Moravia also turned two crucial double plays to hold Union Springs scoreless. With bases loaded in the second, Taylor Mackey had an unassisted double play at third base and in the fourth, shortstop Dustin LeFave started a 6-4 double play.

The Blue Devils (3-3 overall, 3-2 in league) host Lansing today.

Elmira-Notre Dame 17, Southern Cayuga 3

For the Chiefs, Brian Wheeler had a hit, three stolen bases, a walk and two runs, Tyler Jordan had a double, RBI and a stolen base and Ryan Fessenden had an RBI.

Spencer Lawyer also had a hit wile Joe Rocker scored a run.

Onondaga 5, Cato-Meridian 4

Paul Navarro picked up the loss for the Blue Devils who fell behind 5-0 early but clawed back.

Cato-Meridian's offense was led by Pete Marascalchi (RBI), Navarro (RBI, run), Kyle Goldthwait (RBI, run) and Derek Hunsiger (double, run).

The Blue Devils' pitchers didn't have a walk in the game.

Cato-Meridian (2-2) hosts Bishop Grimes today.

Faith Heritage 14, Weedsport 3

The Warriors' Jordan Stott went 2-for-2 with two runs scored while Corey Hinman and Bryce Leitten each went 3-for-4.

SOFTBALL

Weedsport 17, Manlius Pebble Hill 0

Stacie Treat tossed a no-hitter for the Warriors while Jessica Hoffman led the offense, going 5-for-5 with two doubles, three runs scored and four RBIs.

Megan Henderson, Murphey Enos (RBI), Meghan Short (RBI) and Adrienne Barker (three RBIs) each had two hits for Weedsport.

The Warriors (3-2, 3-0) travel to play Port Byron Saturday.

Elmira-Notre Dame 2, Southern Cayuga 1, eight innings

Julie Hewitt threw a complete game, four-hitter while Lindsey Doeing had an RBI double for the Chiefs.

Southern Cayuga gave up one run in the top of the seventh and one run in the eighth.

The Chiefs (4-1) travel to play Union Springs today.

Oswego 7, Auburn 5

Amanda Daum roped three hits, including a double, and an RBI to lead the Maroons.

Auburn took a 3-0 lead in the first but fell behind 7-3 in the seventh. Kristy Piwinski added two hits, while Shannon McCormick, Sara Doan (RBI), Nikki Neagle and Stefanie Spinney (RBI) contributed a hit apiece. Maggie Race and Brianne Raftis were also credited with an RBI each.

Brittney Babcock pitched well, fanning two batters, allowing nine hits and two earned runs in five innings.

Auburn (2-4) heads to Utica on Saturday.

Onondaga 9, Cato-Meridian 0

Stefanie Mitchell struck out 14 Blue Devil batters and had a no-hitter going until Cato-Meridian pitcher Ashley Thomas snuck in a bloop single over Mitchell's head with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Thomas pitched well herself, striking out six, walking two and allowing eight hits and six earned runs in 5 1-3 innings. Eighth grader Amy Thomas relieved her older sister in the pitcher's circle and with the help of the defense, retired every Tiger batter.

Cato-Meridian (2-1) is at Bishop Grimes, today.

BOYS LACROSSE

Tully 10, Jordan-Elbridge 8

R.J. Metz scored twice for the Eagles while Kory Smart supplied one goal and two assists.

Also finding the net was James Simmons, Joe Poppe, Tom Guadagnolo, Kyle Merrill and Steve Major while each Major ad Guadagnolo had assists.

Ken Bush racked up nine saves for the Eagles.

Jordan-Elbridge (5-6) travel to play Manlius Pebble Hill Saturday.

Auburn 10, Corcoran 5

Bob Brannigan had four goals while Matt Chadderdon had three goals and one assist.

Also for the Maroons, Sean Hogan had two goals, Mike Fandrich found the net once and Derek Anderson had two assists.

Mark Green finished with 12 saves.

The Maroons held the advantage in shots (32-16), faceoffs (17-3) and ground balls (31-16).

Auburn (3-7, 1-2) travel to Cicero-North Syracuse Saturday.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Skaneateles 17, Jordan-Elbridge 7

Stephanie Rice had four goals and one assist and Jenna Lotkowictz had four goals for the Lakers.

Also leading Skaneateles was Karen Vitkus (one goal), Shannon Tierney (one goal, one assist), Libby Johnson (three goals, one assist), Kelsey Nangle (three goals, two assists), Lindsay Tarolli (one goal) and Emma Hueber (one assist).

Between the pipes, Heather Mullen had two saves and Gigi Vaughn had three saves.

For the Eagles, Katie Austin had two goals while Marge Bailey, Rianne Farrugia, Kim Armani, Allie Donahue and Aimee Briggs scored once apiece. Bailey, Donahue and Jessica Young had assists for Jordan-Elbridge while Alicia Olmstead had eight saves in goal.

The Lakers (8-1, 3-0) play Carthage at Solvay Tuesday.

BOYS GOLF

Moravia 231, Marathon 245

Ben Shields led the Blue Devils with a 39, Anthony Canestaro shot a 44, Lucas Fedrizzi shot a 46, Pat Mott turned in a 49 and Jeff Alvord carded a 53.

The Blue Devils (2-2) play Southern Cayuga today at Wells College Golf Course.

Southern Cayuga 242, Watkins Glen 250

Jordan Dean and Lewis Morse helped Southern Cayuga to its first victory by shooting a 45 each. Arthur Burt carded a 48, Ben Shaw had a 51 and Casey Underwood shot a 53.

The Chiefs (1-3) host Moravia at Wells College, today.

GIRLS GOLF

Oswego 148, Auburn 167

Megan Cahill led the Maroons with a 38 through seven holes before a thunderstorm halted the match.

Cristina Carmardo had a 39 and Marisa Ranieri and Virginia Porten each carded a 45.

Auburn (0-2) hosts Marcellus on Monday.

Cazenovia 209, Union Springs 253

Jamesville-Dewitt 211, Union Springs 270

Against Cazenovia, the Wolves were led by Lindsey Artman (59) and Katie Smith (60).

Jamie Pearce shot a 59 against Jamesville-Dewitt while Smith turned in a 60.

The Wolves (0-2) play Christian Brothers Academy Wednesday.

TENNIS

Union Springs 6, Moravia 1

Tom Swan defeated Julius McClary 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 in first singles for the Blue Devils only victory.

Amber LeFever fell to Dan Saxton in second singles, 6-4, 0-1 forfeit. In third singles, Tonjia Droczak defeated Kelley Lloyd 6-2, 6-1 and in fourth singles, Michela Hares won over Nicole LeFever 6-2, 6-4.

In doubles matches, Eddie Gonzalez and Brandon Wilmot beat Emilee Greene and Ellen Olszewski 6-3, 6-4. Al Kemp and Kristi Henderson lost to Lindsay Young and Alexa Schooley 6-3, 6-3 and in third doubles, Dan Dienhoffer and Chris Kehoe won the first set, but lost to Ally Weaver and Meghan Calhoun 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
