House fire re-ignites, destroys

When a Port Byron home caught fire Wednesday night, the damage was minimal. But a second round of fire brought destruction.
The fire quashed by firefighters re-ignited by Thursday morning and burned down 1179 Updike Road. Fire officials believe that embers may have been buried into the house's insulation, leading to the second fire that destroyed the structure.

Firefighters first responded to the home around 10:11 p.m. Wednesday because of radiant heat from a chimney pipe that ignited adjacent insulation and wood, Port Byron Chief Corey Rooker said.

The fire appeared to be quelled after firefighters spent an hour and a half Wednesday night at the home and checked for residual heat and flame with thermal imaging cameras, Rooker said.

“Somehow or other there were buried embers in there,” Rooker said. “The second time it was a total loss.”

“(Thursday) morning was the very worst of the fire,” Rooker added.

Firefighters responded to the Updike Road residence a second time around 6:30 a.m. “It was a long night,” Rooker said.

No one was injured in the fire. Three volunteers with the Cayuga County Red Cross chapter went to the fire scene Thursday morning and provided homeowner Russ Bergner and his daughter, Michelle, with clothing and food, said Christopher Molloy, director of emergency services.

The Bergners have an alternative place to stay, Molloy said.

In addition to the Port Byron Fire Department, the Aurelius, Cato, Jordan, Montezuma, Sennett, Throop and Weedsport fire departments responded. The Elbridge Fire Department was on standby.

The large number of fire departments were present because of the short manpower in the daylight hours, Rooker said.

" I think what taxes was trying to say is that no matter what time of day or night a paid department is on duty to answer your call. Vols do a great job when they are able to respond but in some areas it is a crap shoot. You can't plan your emergency around a volunteers work schedule, after all they have to provide for their families too. Many places around here can only get a few trained and qualified people to a scene during daytime hours and some places can't get any at all during the day. I for one choose to live in the city and pay the tax load for having a police officer or firetruck at my home in less than 5 minutes in the event of an emergency. "

" The only difference between a paid fireman and a volunteer is simple. A paid fireman may do it becuase he enjoys the job or whatever , but he is also paid for his services . A volunteer does it simply because he enjoys it and/or wishes to help his community . Don't get me wrong all firemen are brave souls and deserve much respect but even the "career" firfighters aren't able to save everything. So my advice to you would be to get real , sometimes things just happen for a reason and no matter how hard we try to stop them or how much water we douse the flames with , we still can't manage to fix the entire problem. "

" To Worth The Taxes, I am not sure what the issue in Port Byron is. I have volunteered in the Fire Service since 1979 and what happen there can happen anywhere. But, I guess your "CAREER Dept. would have done a better job saving the hose just like they did Dunn & McCarthy's. In less you have experienced being a Firefighter yourself, you have no idea what you are talking about !! "

" Being a older person who is on a fixed income and lived in Port Byron all my life I think the Volunteer Fire Department does a fine job. Where this house is there are no hyrdants and and volunteers firemen did a good job both times. And by the way, tell me how much a paid fire department would cost Port Byron tax payers!! I wouldn't be albe ato afford a paid department. "

" The issue in Port Byron is EXACTLY why i pay for a CAREER Dept. Any questions? "
