SKANEATELES - On paper, it looked like the Skaneateles boys lacrosse team could cruise to victory over Manlius Pebble Hill. The Lakers came into Wednesday's game with five wins in their last six games, while the Trojans have lost every game by an average margin of 16-3. In half of their games, they scored just once or not at all.

Predictably, the Lakers didn't face much adversity at Arthur W. Hyatt Stadium at Skaneateles High School, winning 20-1. Previously this season, Skaneateles' largest margin of victory was five in two games and the team had averaged eight goals per game.

“We just knew that we want ed ed to go into this game with the same attitude that we go into every other one with,” Lakers attacker Devin Lynch said. “We just wanted to play hard and play team ball.”

They did both.

Eleven players earned a point one way or another and despite a 12-1 halftime lead, the Lakers didn't let up or lose their focus.

“We just tried to work the ball around and try to work it to the other players,” Lynch said. “We picked it up when we got the chance, distributed the ball well and got everybody in the game.”

Skaneateles took a 5-0 lead in the first quarter before the Trojans crossed midfield and had a 8-0 advantage before they attempted their first shot. Cameron Winfield got off the first of six total shots for MPH at the 1:05 mark in the first quarter, but Josh Kimm made a good save, the first of five. Lynch scored his third goal of the game on a pass from sophomore Emmer to give the Lakers the eight-point lead heading into the second quarter. Lynch and Emmer hooked up for three goals total, two of them were passes from the senior.

“Patrick is a big target,” Lynch said. “I like to get the new guys a feeling for it, to get them some passes and see how they can handle it.”

Emmer tallied four goals and three assists. Two of them came on the back-to-back passes from Lynch in a 3:33 time span in the third. Lynch also had his highest point total of the season, with six scores and the two passes. The Lakers attempted 40 shots and while Dave Herman had 15 good saves, he allowed all 12 scores in the first half. John Saltman came in the cage in the second half in relief, but had two saves with eight goals allowed.

“This was a tough matchup,” Skaneateles coach Ron Doctor said. “But every program in Central New York has gone through it, just like (MPH). You have to start somewhere; Skaneateles started 25 years ago. It's tough, but from my standpoint, we respect opponents like that. It's good for the game and good for the players. The matchups are different with these two programs, one is beginning and we're a little more established, so it's a learning experience both ways.”

The Lakers also dominated in faceoffs, 17-8. Minutes after taking their first shot on goal, the Trojans scored on their third shot - a Bruce Dew pass from Scott Meehan at the 4:04 mark in the second quarter. Jeff Donigan spaced out three goals in the first three quarters, along with an assist for Skaneateles. Eric Richards earned a goal and an assist in the first half and Erich Pingel scored two goals and two assists. Scott Castle distributed an assist. Win Wickwire scored his second goal of the season at the end of the third, to the ovation of his teammates on the field. James Allen, Sean Morely and Will Kraus each scored their first goals of the season, and Matt Wood earned his first assist of the year.

“We don't have a deep squad, but we tried to get everyone on the field,” Doctor said. “It was a case of us getting a lot of guys some playing time, which they haven't really gotten all season.”

Skaneateles (7-3) is at Christian Brothers Academy on Monday.

“Today, we probably got more of a test on offense than on defense,” Doctor said. “But this game was part of our schedule and we respect (MPH) for being here. It's a challenge for both sides, but it's part of what we do.”
