Port Byron hasn't played in a golf match since 1978. That streak ended Tuesday.
The first-year Panthers opened the 2007 campaign with some nerves and plenty of excitement in a 213-277 loss to Bishop Grimes at Cranebrook Golf Course.
“It was a huge first step,” Port Byron coach Steve Leary said. “At first I think our guys were a little nervous, but when they got rolling they really enjoyed it.”
Seventh-grader Andy Leary led the Panthers with a 48, Dan Wilkinson carded a 54 and Zac Leja turned in a 55.
Port Byron (0-1) hosts Cato-Meridian Thursday.
