The Actor's Speakeasy closes its 2006-07 season this weekend, and the Seneca Community Players mount the second play of its 35th season, while the CCC theater reopens its doors with a one-night-only musical.
Speakeasy wraps up with “The Balcony Scene” by Wil Calhoun, a breezy comedy about a reclusive writer getting reacquainted with the world through his new neighbor, a young woman who has recently ended a long-term relationship with a man who still pursues her. Calhoun is a former writer and producer of the hit TV show “Friends,” and the same comic sensibilities that made him successful with the series are in evidence in this play. “The Balcony Scene” runs at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, at the Auburn Public Theater, 108 Genesee St., Auburn. Tickets are available at the door.
Seneca Community Players, meanwhile, opens “Enchanted April” this weekend. The show is Matthew Barber's adaptation of Elizabeth von Arnim's 1921 novel about oppressed wives who decide to take a spring holiday together in Tuscany. The comedy is directed by Becky Bly and runs through next Saturday, at the Delavan Theater on the NY Chiropractic College campus, Route 89 in Seneca Falls. Tickets are available at WomanMade Products in Seneca Falls, Area Records & Music in Geneva, by calling 568-9364 and online at www.SenecaCommunityPlayers.org.
When an aging Little Orphan Annie, bitter that the lack of a sequel has doomed her career, is murdered, two star detectives from television's “Law and Order: SVU” arrive to solve the crime.
That's the premise for the outrageous “Forbidden Broadway: Special Victim's Unit,” which plays tomorrow night only for the grand reopening of the newly renovated CCC Theater on Franklin Street in Auburn.
The show is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to a host of Broadway musicals and stars.
Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show are $20 for general admission, $10 for CCC students with college ID and $15 for senior citizens (age 65 and over).
Tickets may be purchased in advance at the information desk in the main campus building or by calling 255-1743.
Syracuse University Drama Department stages the Gershwin brothers' musical “My One and Only” through May 12. For tickets, call 443-3275; use the same number to reserve your seats for Syracuse Stage's “Death of a Salesman,” which runs through this weekend. Stage will open Agatha Christie's “The Unexpected Guest” May 16. The play runs through June 10.
Congratulations go out to The Auburn Players. Its production of “The Tempest” received a Meritorious Achievement in Production for the cast and crew from The Theatre Association of New York. And updating a previous atta boy, Auburn High students Ryan Oliver and Suzanne Smith were named finalists and then won in the Syracuse Stage Young Playwrights festival. Scenes from their work were performed last week by SU drama students before a live audience.
