The Weedsport Central School District's proposed budget for 2007-2008 would increase the tax levy by 5.5 percent, according to Shaun O'Connor, the district's superintendent.
Last year's tax levy went up 5.4 percent, and this year's would go up 5.5 percent, O'Connor said. Next year's total budget is slated to come in at $16,387,015.

The school board unanimously approved the proposed budget Monday, April 9.

The biggest cost increases are in the same categories that impact large businesses of all types: contractual obligations, including contributions to retiree pensions, and increases in the price of fuel and electric power, O'Connor said.

It's the “costs of running, basically, a big business,” he said.

The proposed budget includes $341,305 for contractual obligations; $269,295 for Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES services; $96,659 for employee benefits; and $73,147 for the BOCES building project. The district's state aid is at $6,601,593.

The district is not making any programming or staffing changes, and remains “dedicated to maintaining the high-level program we have in place,” O'Connor said.

" Ask to see what was budgeted last year in the categories they are claiming increased. Ask to see what the actual cost was This information by law has to be provided to the state. Districts will generally inflate these items thus securing monies that can be used for contracts. "For example" Health Insurance the district could have budgeted lets say $500,000 the actual bill for health insurance could be $250,000 the district will then tell the public that the health insurance premiums increased 30% and they then build on the last amount budgeted in this case $500,000. The public believes this ploy because they see it happening to their own premiums, as their own co pays increased as well as their weekly contribution. Now this is nothing more than a brief example of what districts do to get additional monies from the tax payers. This is just one reason why districts always raise taxes. They will also do the same thing for fuel, gas and electric, and any other area the public can relate to. So either ask the questions that need to be asked or DIG DEEPER IN YOUR POCKETS "

" No tax increase should be higher than the CPI or the median increase in income; neither of which ever comes close to the 5 - 6 % that school asks for each year! "

" It's time the people in Weedsport start voting NO on the school budget. Already the highest taxed district in the area, here's another increase. "
