AUBURN - A grieving mother said she has to forgive her ex-husband for a drunk driving accident that killed her 4-year-old daughter last summer.
"As mad as we are about the situation, we have to forgive," Stacey Lamphere said in Cayuga County Court Tuesday. "Jerry will spend a lifetime facing himself for what has happened and knowing that our precious baby is gone. We pray and trust that God will put his hand on the sentencing for Jerry, for he's already been sentenced for a lifetime already."

Brooke Lamphere was not in a child seat when she died in a one-car crash on Potter Road in Throop July 21, 2006. Brooke was partially ejected through the rear window and suffered fatal trauma to her body.

Another older child passenger who was in the back seat of Lamphere's Dodge with Brooke was not seriously injured when the car entered a ditch on the west side of Potter Road, flipped over and came to rest on its wheels.

Jerry Lamphere was sentenced to an agreed-upon five to 10 years in state prison for the felony of second-degree manslaughter and the misdemeanors of endangering the welfare of a child and driving while intoxicated .

" I am pretty sure if Stacey wants to forgive, then that is her business and not for everyone to judge. I am sure every single one of us has made a decision that someone disagrees with, the only difference is our decisions are not published in The Citizen. Personally I don't know if I could forgive someone that hurt my child, hopefully I will never be in that situation. Unless you are in the situation than you really can't judge. "

" There is no way to tell for certain, but I'm guessing that there is no worse feeling to live with than that of the pain of causing the untimely death of a loved one. I don't believe that Stacey will ever be able to truly forgive, but perhaps her words of acceptance will provide Jerry with the reinforcement to overcome his personal struggles. "

" Stacey knows. She has chosen the right way. Forgiveness. GOD will heal her heart. Unforgiveness will not bring Brooke back. It will only feed anger, and hurt, and unending pain. Forgiveness is key. Well Done Stacey! GOD's Peace!! "

" Why is this even an article? If she wants to forgive or blame forever fine, but why is it news? This is still a newspaper... isn't it? "

" There is a special place in state prison for Lamphere. Every day will be a living hell. He deserves every minute and much, much more. "

" To those who do not have family skeltons in their closet, I say rave on, for you and yours have not had to experience pain. Thank God for that. "

" What a horrible bunch of holier than thou, sad excuses for human beings you are! It is none of your business if this woman chooses to forgive or not and to even suggest that money makes a difference shows your ignorance. Leave the woman in peace and keep your miserable judgments to yourselves. "

What???? wrote on Apr 24, 2007 5:29 PM:

" Unbelievable--maybe it's easier to forgive him knowing that she's now going to be $90,000 richer since he's relinquished any rights to the money for Brooke's death!!!! As a parent I can't even imagine forgiving someone who hurt my child let alone killed them and then to profit off of their death.....it's so sad to me how some people can be especially when it concerns their child! I hope that God will forgive "ALL" parties involved--I don't believe that Jerry's the only one to blame in this. "

I am outraged! wrote on Apr 24, 2007 5:12 PM:

" I am outraged because Jerry was sentenced to 5-10 years for the murder of a defenseless child! A child is dead because of someone's stupidity! Was justice done for Brooke? I think not! What is wrong with this system???? "

Unreal!! wrote on Apr 24, 2007 4:49 PM:

" I can not believe she is forgiving him.you do not forgive anyone who murdered your child intentionally, and endangered another.Parents are to protect there children from harms way.Sorry there is no forgivness ever. "

At least someone realizes..... wrote on Apr 24, 2007 4:25 PM:

" At least someone realizes that it is not up to us to judge, but up to God. All of Brooke's family, including both her mother Stacey and her father Jerry will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. "
