AUBURN - A group at Auburn's United Methodist Church, through their diligence and determination, makes worldwide missions quite possible.
The church's four-member Missions Commission strives to realize the efforts of various local charitable organizations by spreading the word of God, and information about those charities, throughout the community.
On Sunday afternoon, the church held a missions fair to educate people on the endeavors of local organizations such as Matthew House and local Christian radio station WMHR, among others.
The fair, which took place in the church fellowship hall from 5 to 7 p.m., included a delectable pot luck dinner and was attended by dozens of guests.
“Today's (fair) is being held to highlight four of the missions that we support, because we contribute to them all year long,” said Elizabeth Nash of Auburn, church secretary and Missions Commission member, from the church Sunday evening.
The commission's purpose, Nash explained, is to encourage the community to donate their time and money to the charities the church supports.
“Every year we set up a budget to help these (groups),” she said, adding that the church has sponsored foreign missionaries worldwide.
“About five years ago, we sponsored a group that went to the Dominican Republic,” she said. The dozen-member missionary spread God's word in remote villages, she added, and spent seven days there.
At Sunday's fair, dozens took part in an enormous pot-luck buffet before listening to the missions present information on their charitable efforts.
One of the participating organizations was Marcel Broadcasting and its station WMHR, which are both Christian-format groups, said Wayne Taylor, network head, during Sunday's fair.
“We try to encourage people to learn more about God and introduce Christian teaching to the community, and this church supports us by holding (events) like today's fair,” he said.
