AUBURN #- This July local bowlers Greg Walczyk and Steve Crozier will be making their way to Louisville, Ky., to try their luck against the best bowlers in the nation in doubles competition.
The team qualified by taking third place in Cortland for the state competition last summer.
“We've known each other for years,” Crozier said. “We've bowled in the same leagues and everything. But that was the first time we tried anything like this and I guess it paid off.”
The duo bowled a combined 1,348, just a few pins behind the first-place team that rolled a 1,387.
The two said they click well and complement each other's skills.
“We bowl the same line,” Walczyk said. “We throw the same ball, and we have a good attitude about what we do, so I think that helps.”
Both Walczyk and Crozier have been on the lanes for a number of years.
Crozier got his start 50 years ago in Horseheads.
“It was something to do,” Crozier said. “It was something fun and that I enjoyed.”
When he moved to Auburn in 1993 he was quick to get involved in the local bowling scene.
Walczyk started when he was 18 and hasn't looked back.
“My father bowled,” Walczyk said. “So I'd go out and bowl with my buddies; it was just fun. Now I can't play basketball or football anymore, but I can still do this. It is just something I've always done.”
Over their combined years, both have racked up some impressive numbers.
Crozier has seven 300 games and an 800 to his credit, while Walczyk has three 300s.
But even with their combined talent, they weren't sure how they would fair in state competition.
“I didn't think that we bowled all that well,” Walczyk said. “But I guess in the end we didn't do too bad.”
Since qualifying for nationals, both have stayed busy on the lanes at least a few times a week, building up for the summer.
“This is something we've never done before,” Walczyk said. “So we don't really know what to expect. I just hope we do well.”
The chance to compete against the best from across the country is one that both are looking forward to.
“I'm interested to see how we do,” Crozier said. “I'm interested to bowl against the best in the U.S. and see what we can do.”
