MISS: To possible cuts in federal education funding.
U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer warns that local school districts could lose thousands of dollars, which could deeply hurt education.
The Auburn Enlarged City School District could be shorted more than $700,000 if Congress fails to restore cuts in the Bush administration's education budget, Schumer said.
This is not what the “No Child Left Behind Act” should mean.
HIT: To Tom and Jeanie Lewis as they prepare to co-chair this fall's United Way fundraising campaign. The Lewises suffered a tragic loss when their son Christian, 20, died from a brain tumor but learned how valuable the United Way is in supporting organizations that helped them when their son was ill.
The Lewises are the perfect choice to remind Cayuga County residents of the importance of the United Way in the day-to-day assistance of those who need help.
We predict another record-setting fund-raising campaign for the United Way later this year.
MISS: Not just to radio show host Don Imus' ignorant remarks about Rutgers women's basketball players, but to the national media's incessant coverage of the fallout.
Sadly, in this 24/7 media world we now live in, stories like this never ebb; instead they thrive. Too bad the media has to stoop to Imus' level in an attempt for higher ratings.
HIT: To local tourism industry leaders, for securing a comprehensive study of the Cayuga County tourism industry. Results of the analysis, unveiled this week, offered numerous ideas local professionals in the tourism fields can use to attract more visitors to this area. There's no doubt that tourism is a growth industry for this county. But we agree more can be done to realize its full potential.
