Rep. Arcuri to hold
agriculture meeting
U.S Rep. Michael A. Arcuri, D-Utica, will host an agricultural roundtable in Cayuga County Saturday, April 14, to bring together farmers and concerned community members to discuss specific needs of the local agricultural community as Congress prepares to reauthorize the Farm Bill.
Panelists will include local dairy, beef and organic farmers and representatives from wineries and vineyards, as well as representatives from governmental and educational agriculture organizations.
The forum will run from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Cayuga Community College, 197 Franklin St., Auburn.
The meeting is open to the public.
APD arrests man twice this week
An Auburn man was arrested twice this week by the Auburn Police Department, once on charges of breaking a door with his shoulder and a second on charges of allowing a 12-year-old to smoke marijuana.
Joshua L. Menges, 18, of 31 Frances St., was charged Monday with the misdemeanor of fourth-degree criminal mischief in the first incident.
Menges was charged Tuesday with the felony of second-degree criminal sale of marijuana, the misdemeanor of endangering the welfare of a child and the violation of possession of marijuana for the alleged provision of pot to a minor.
Menges' bail was set at $1,000 cash or $2,000 bond in Auburn City Court Wednesday. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, April 17.
Sentencing delayed for cat abuser
The sentencing of the second man who admitted tying up a stolen pet cat and setting it on fire at an Elbridge trailer park Dec. 20 was rescheduled for 8:30 a.m. Monday, April 23.
Dustin Gauger, 20, with a last known address of 8338 W. Loop Road, Port Byron, will appear in front of Onondaga County Court Judge Anthony Aloi for his sentencing on the class E felony of aggravated cruelty to an animal. Aloi has committed to sentencing Gauger to the maximum sentence of two years in state prison.
Kyle D. Custer, 18, with a last known address of Lot 241 Champion Trailer Park, Elbridge, was sentenced Monday to two years in prison for the cat killing and another one to three years in prison for an unrelated felony rape conviction.
Gauger also has been accused of a similar, unrelated statutory rape crime.
S. Cayuga candidates must obtain petitions
Anyone interested in serving on the Southern Cayuga School District Board of Education must obtain a petition from the district office, collect 25 signatures and return it to the district office by 4 p.m. Monday, April 16.
Members serve a three-year term. A candidate has to be a voter of the district. Elections are Tuesday, May 15.
Gone4Ever exhibit coming to Weedsport
The Gone4Ever exhibit, which depicts images and thoughts about five central New York teenagers who died in three fatal accidents caused because of drunk or reckless driving, will be displayed in Weedsport from April 23 to 27.
The exhibit will be open to the public 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, Wednesday, April 25, and Thursday April 26. The exhibit will be in the high school gymnasium.
School officials encourage parents and guardians to bring their middle-schoolers and their high-schoolers to the exhibit and view it together.
