Program looks for life beyond Earth
“Life Beyond Earth,” a multi-media presentation, examines the possibility of life on other planets. The show will be held at 7 tonight, at the Southern Cayuga school. It is accompanied by a stars-on-the-dome program, “Where the Planets Are Tonight.”
Clear skies permitting, the nearby observatory will open to view distant stars, nebulas and galaxies. The event is free and open to all.
Attendees are advised to arrive 15 minutes early for the best seating. Doors close when the theater's 60 seats are filled.

Herman Chess Club to hold bottle drive
The Herman Avenue Elementary Chess Club is in need of funds and will hold a bottle and can drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at the school, 2 N. Herman Ave., Auburn. All money raised benefits the chess club activities.

Nine SUNY colleges to visit high schools
An admissions team representing nine State University of New York colleges will visit high schools in Cayuga County during the week of April 23.
At each school, the team will conduct a 45-minute presentation and mini-fair for high school juniors. Topics include cost, financial aid, scholarships and admission requirements for each campus.
After the presentation, students can meet individually with representatives of the colleges. Participating colleges are Cayuga Community College, SUNY Cortland, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, SUNY Institute of Technology, SUNY Morrisville, Onondaga Community College, SUNY Oswego, Tompkins Cortland Community College and Upstate Medical University.
Scheduled visits are Monday afternoon, April 23, at Southern Cayuga High School with Union Springs and Moravia students as guests; Thursday morning, April 26, at Auburn High School; Thursday afternoon, April 26, at Port Byron High School with Weedsport and Cato-Meridian students as guests.
Fedorchuk inducted into honor society
Adrianne Fedorchuk, daughter of Michael and Jean Fedorchuk, of Auburn, was inducted into Ithaca College's Oracle Honor Society in March. Adrianne is a freshman in the college's School of Music.
Shamon fund aids Catholic education
The Rev. Albert J. Shamon Catholic Education Committee has contributed funding to several families who find it financially challenging to send their children to Catholic school. The recipients attend SS. Peter and Paul, St. Joseph School and Tyburn Academy.
A fund was established in Shamon's later years to encourage parents to send their children to Catholic schools. The Father Shamon Golf Tournament is the primary source of income for the fund.
