Each Thursday, we put one of our local newsmakers On The Spot.
This week: U.S. Rep. Michael Arcuri
This week's question: What's your opinion of the way the U.S. House's troop withdrawal/war spending bill included unrelated amendments in order to get enough votes to be passed?
The U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Health, and Iraq Accountability Act contains critical funding for our troops and veterans, increases funding for homeland security and national preparedness, and provides vital assistance for farmers.
Governing is about helping people and improving the quality of life. The legislation improves health care for the 1,171,898 veterans in New York. It addresses critical national needs and sets a new course for the war in Iraq by bringing our troops home safely and responsibly.
In this legislation we address legitimate unmet needs that require serious attention. The legislation provides $2.5 billion in additional funding to ensure that our troops are properly equipped and trained; $2.8 billion for Defense Health Care; and $1.7 billion for veterans' health care which fulfills our promise to veterans and troops that they receive the care they deserve.
Funding for improved aviation and port security, as well as enhanced security on our northern border, are also included in the legislation. I strongly support ensuring our airports, ports and borders are safe and secure, especially here in New York.
The legislation also extends the MILC program, which is vital to the success of dairy farms in Cayuga and Seneca counties. I strongly support extending this program because I know local dairy farmers depend on federal support when prices are volatile. Dairy is the largest segment of agriculture in New York and our state ranks third in milk production nationwide.
Each provision of this legislation addresses a critical need that has gone unnoticed for too long. People right here in Cayuga County voted for change and a new direction for our nation last November, and that's exactly what this legislation provides.
