A new college scholarship in memory of long-time Auburn businessman Charles Goldman will be presented annually to an Auburn High School senior beginning this spring.
The first Charles B. Goldman Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to at least one senior who has demonstrated a deep interest in the public affairs of the community, the nation and the world through regular reading of news publications and other non-fiction works and has applied this knowledge in academic and/or extracurricular pursuits.

Seniors planning to attend a two- or four-year college or university in the fall 2007 are eligible.

An essay of up to 350 words will be required as part of the application, which has an April 15 submission deadline.

Full details are available from AHS guidance counselors.

Goldman, an Auburn native, was the owner and operator of The Liberty Store in downtown Auburn for most of his adult life.

A graduate of Auburn East High School and Ohio State University, he was a voracious reader of three to four daily newspapers, news magazines and non-fiction works on historical and contemporary themes.

He died last October.

The memorial scholarship is supported by his children and other family members.

" a wonderful way for someone to give back to the community. I shop at the Liberty Store and things like this are why I love living here. People who give to the community make this a wonderful area. "
