With spring weather on the horizon all good Scouts are starting to get excited about the prospects of heading off to summer camp with their buddies and fellow Scouts. For our younger Scouts that means a week or a weekend at our own Camp Rotary right here on Owasco Lake.
This year, Scouts are not only being invited to Camp, they are being invited to go on a jungle safari. Our adventure will be a little tamer than the African variety but will still provide some exciting experiences for our Scouts. All of our camp buildings and program areas will be renamed to fit this theme. Staff and Scouts alike will also be dressing for the occasion with gray safari camp T-shirts featuring a charging African elephant.
Even the Camp Trading Post will offer wild animal novelties including long black snakes that always make nice gifts to bring home to mom or to just leave in your backpack as a surprise.
While at camp, Scouts can learn how to swim, go boating, do leatherwork, woodworking and archery, learn about nature, play field sports, do craft projects and participate in great campfire programs.
Camp is open to all boys both Scouts and non Scouts who have completed kindergarten through 10 years of age.
Cathy Feocco, camp program director said that three different camping opportunities are being offered this year. Cub Scout Day Camp will run for two one-week periods July 16 through 20 and July 23 through 27. A camp bus will run from the northern part of the county south to camp. The program day is from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays.
Our Lad and Dad / Mom and Me Camp runs July 13 through 15. It offers a one-on-one camping opportunity for a parent or other caring adult to spend with their son.
Our Webelos Camp, scheduled for July 27 through 29 offers a program for older (9- and 10-year-old) Cub Scouts. A parent may sign up and join their son if they wish. Scouts will receive a more challenging and independent experience during this camp period.
Camp Rotary is comprised of 24-wooded acres nestled on the east side of Owasco Lake.
Its facilities include a dining hall, chapel, health lodge, trading post, central shower and five camp sites with lean-tos and tent areas.
Summer camp information booklets with camp applications are being mailed out to all registered Scouts this month. Parents of boys who are not currently Scouts can pick up an application at the Scout Office or call 252-9579 and one can be mailed to you. Any boy who signs up by May 15 will receive a free “Camp Bonus Pack” that includes a fishing reel, a pocket magnifier and a choice of either a Camp Rotary mini tote or a safari lite flash light.
For more information about Scouting and how your son can join, call or stop out to the Cayuga County Council Service Center and Scout Shop.
