Each Sunday, The Citizen features a pet which is available for adoption.
This week, we spotlight Maggie from the Finger Lakes SPCA.
Q. Who is your best friend?
A. Since I came to my foster home I have made a lot of best friends. They are Montana the horse, Piggy, Viggo and Sam the dogs and Eddie, Eli and Mater the felines. Best of all is my foster mom.
Q. Do you know any special tricks?
A. Nothing that every highly intelligent and motivated canine wouldn't know.
Q. Do you get along with other animals?
A. Yes - I am feline, equine and canine-friendly! Haven't tried any chickens or llamas yet - but think they wouldn't be a problem at all.
Q. Who do prefer, adults or children?
A. Probably adults - especially high energy adults.
Q. How often do you like to be groomed?
A. A quick brushing every day would be good - and a bath as necessary.
Q. What has been your worst experience?
A. My worst experience was having to leave my other home. I still don't know what I did wrong.
Q. When you go to your new home, what is the first thing you want to do?
A. The first thing I'm going to do is find a good walking/running trail so I can take my new humans for a workout.
Q. If you could have been born a famous person who would that be?
A. I think that would be Louis Pasteur. Among other things, he developed the rabies vaccine which has made such a difference to both humans and animals alike.
Q. If you could visit any place in the world, where would that be?
A. I am part Huskey and there is some evidence that I descended from the Chukchi Sled Dog which came from Siberia. So - I would like, at some time, to visit Siberia - very cool in more ways than one.
A. Q. Do you have any advice for the Citizen's readers?
A. Yes. I would like to tell everyone reading this that they must do their research and make sure that all pets brought into their homes are compatible with their lifestyle. That will help ensure that the new home is a forever home.
Maggie
Age: Less than 2 years old
Breed: Huskey-shepherd mix
Comments from the SPCA: Maggie came to the shelter last year. She clearly didn't care too much for being in her kennel. She was quite the barker - and was trying to tell us - hurry up and find me a new home! Earlier this month Maggie entered foster care, she acclimated beautifully to her new surroundings and there has been a near complete transformation.
In her foster home she was introduced to three cats, three dogs and a horse. All introductions went smoothly. Maggie goes to work with her foster mom every day where she snoozes and sometimes greets visitors. She will crate if necessary, however, she has spent a few hours on the loose in the house with no problems at all. Most of all Maggie loves walks. She loves to run through the fields and woods and she burns off some of her extra energy, after which she likes to lie at your feet and relax. Maggie's “ideal” human(s) would be adults that will include her in much of their daily life, like to be outdoors, take her for rides and give her lots of gentle attention.
Maggie is heartworm negative, is up to date on her vaccinations, and has been spayed. The adoption donation for her is $92.50 which includes testing, vaccinations, spay and licensing. Anyone interested in making her acquaintance can do so by calling her foster mom at (315) 406-4025.
