For the third time in as many months, the Actor's Speakeasy will be bringing theater to the stage of The Auburn Public Theater. They open this weekend with selections from Neil LaBute's “Bash” and with George F. Walker's “Criminal Genius.”
LaBute was the author of the scenes that made up “Autobahn,” part of Speakeasy's second production this year. The scenes from “Bash” include Hilary Ford in “Medea Redux” and Chris Haulter in “Iphigenia in Orem.” Both titles refer to characters from ancient Greek theater, and LaBute here references their tragedies.
Ford appears as a woman undergoing an interrogation for an unspecified crime. Haulter plays a traveling salesman who decides to unburden his soul to a stranger in a bar. LaBute is also the author of the screenplays for “In the Company of Men,” “Nurse Betty” and “The Shape of Things” and directed the Nicholas Cage remake of “The Wicker Man.”
George F. Walker is a Canadian playwright whose “Criminal Genius” is part of his Suburban Motel series. The play details the comic problems that develop when a couple of small time hoods try to outwit a mobster.
The cast features Jessica Cantu, Jeremy Carey, Michael Antico, Michelle Foytek and Lisa Myers. Walker's plays are known for challenging both the cast and audience, by using language not normally associated with the character type. His approach has been successful enough to have earned several awards.
The plays are directed by Chicago native Jason Elliott Pikscher, who also directed last month's excellent “Autobahn” and “Match.”
The plays are intended for adult audiences.
