UTICA - A 62-year-old woman was convicted Wednesday of murdering her husband by slipping him a fatal dose of antifreeze in a drink.
An Oneida County Court jury deliberated less than three hours before finding Marguerite Bork guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Terrance Bork in September 2005, delivering the verdict at midafternoon to a packed courtroom.
Marguerite Bork, who faces 25 years to life in prison at her sentencing May 9, testified on her own behalf Tuesday, denying she had poisoned her husband of 20 years.
In his closing remarks Wednesday, defense attorney Donald Gerace reminded jurors that there was no evidence Bork had killed her husband.
“There is no proof that a crime was even committed in this case,” Gerace said. “This is an absolute nightmare for this woman. She loses her husband and now she's accused of killing him.”
However, Assistant District Attorney Laurie Lisi said Bork killed her husband to collect the death benefits from his life insurance policy after finding out that Terrance Bork was having an affair with a friend and was planning to leave her. Marguerite Bork had no job, no money, no future, Lisi said.
