From MySpace to the Mall: Stars of 2morrow
From MySpace to the Mall: Stars of 2morrow
The shopping mall is the starting point of many a music career. The mall tours of pop stars Tiffany and Britney Spears are the stuff of suburban legend that pasted to our minds the image of each teenage songstress serenading their peers in front of the food court proscenium.
Fingerlakes Mall will give Cayuga County youngsters a glimpse at the next generation of music's shopping mall sweethearts when F.Y.E. presents the MyPOP8 Tour.
The tour's debt to the social power of MySpace is evident not only in its name - which plays upon the “Top 8” friends users select for their pages - but also the massive word of mouth tour organizers have spread through the site.
The touring octet consists of Playback, Monet, Scandalez, Tawny Heat, Joey Page, Bre, Raposo and Nu-Tren.
Although each artist brings a unique style to the MyPOP8 stage, the same sugary hooks that characterize pop music lie under every song.
“It's pretty much your 93Q, mainstream, whatever-the-kids-listen-to-type stuff,” said Jennifer Teubner, Fingerlakes Mall's F.Y.E. store manager.
Scandelez specializes in the laid-back Southern hip hop stylings of Ludacris, and Playback's sweetly flowing R&B sound is more reminiscent of Usher. Monet, meanwhile, vents her lover's quarrel-inspired lyrics over a chord- crunching rock chorus, not unlike Avril Lavigne.
The concert will be structured like a super-charged pop music medley.
The mixture of genres will almost blitz the audience with 10-minute sets allocated to each artist. Following their stage time, each of the eight performers will be available to autograph CDs and talk with concert-goers.
The MyPOP8 Tour will mark the first concert Fingerlakes Mall has held in several years.
Tour organizers were originally eyeing Carousel Center for the show, but the Syracuse mall's curfew necessitated a move to another teen-friendly venue. Fingerlakes Mall was more than happy to host the show.
“We've been trying to get events at this mall for a long time,” Teubner said.
Between the national promotion done through the MyPOP8 MySpace Web site and local advertisements for the show, Teubner is optimistic that the Fingerlakes Mall food court will be overflowing with music fans eager to spot the next pop star to take the national stage.
“We've put a lot of effort into encouraging people to come out,” Teubner said.
