A city employee will step up to the helm of Auburn's planning department.
Next week, Jennifer Haines will shed her old title of planning and economic development program manager and become director of the Auburn Office of Planning and Economic Development.

“I am really excited about this, and I'm looking forward to ... (continuing) with some of our initiatives and starting more in the future,” Haines said.

The 14-year city hall veteran will step into the role Monday.

The position has remained vacant since Stephen Lynch resigned in August and took a job heading Cayuga County's planning office.

City Manager Mark Palesh told Haines he wants to concentrate on addressing the vacant housing around the city, as well as attracting more development, she said.

A housing study released in November stated Auburn planners needed to address the abandoned housing stock issue. Haines said the department plans to follow the recommendations of the housing market study.

City planner Christopher D. DeProspero will take Haines spot as program manager.

Haines applied and interviewed for the position in which she beat out three other candidates.

" some real efforts in recruiting new corporations and businesses with this change at in the city EDC. The current programs a so limiting. There must be more incentives for grants available on the state and federal level. Right now, grants just don't exist. The EDC needs to do more in the business area than they've done to date, which is nill. "

" And that's another thing, too. If the city were to fix up these vacant houses and rent them out to welfare families, then at least the welfare money would come back to the city, and not in some fat slum lord's pocket. "

" You're tax dollars are already being wasted on welfare, welfare pays rent and the mortgages of slum lords, slum lords are sitting back collecting your tax dollars everyday. How do you decide who is "right"? That's easy, let's help out the families who are earning minimum wage, since those are the only jobs that people in Auburn can get, becasue the only enterprises coming to Auburn are corporate retail minimun wage paying jobs, sucking all the money out of Auburn. "

" American Nightmare, don't be so prejudicial. No tax payer dollars would be involved, the families would be paying the city directly, the city would act as the finance company. Really, what's better a run-down, crappy house in your neighborhood, or one that has been rehabed, and is being occupied by a family that is proud to own a home. It's people like you who hold other less-fournate people back from attaining their goals and dreams. When people have a nice house, and nice things, it makes them feel better about themselves. The vacant houses throughout this city are bringing property values down, they're lowering the quality of life, squatters are living in them, etc.etc. I'm glad to see Mr. Palesh is addressing this problem. "

" Congratulations to Ms. Haines!!! It is well deserved and good to see the City Manager promote from within! "

" How do you decide who is "right" to purchase a home? Why do this, only to have to go to the expense to take it back when they realize that they can not pay the taxes? I do not want my tax dollars to be wasted buying homes for those who can not earn enough to buy one themselves. "

" Hey Mark Palesh, if you are reading this: Please implement a program so that lower income families can buy the vacant houses from the city of Auburn directly, in which they pay you, of course with a lower interest than convential mortgage companies, and then please help with the restoration, as well. I really think that such a program as this, would bring a tremendous amount of pride in ownership back to our communities. After all, owning a home is the "American Dream" "
