Auburn driver injured in crash
An Auburn driver was involved in a head-on collision with another car on Route 34 in Lansing Monday morning, the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office reported.
Deputies determined that Alexander Orofino, of Auburn, was operating a 2002 Hyundai southbound on Route 34 when his vehicle crossed into the northbound lane and struck a 1999 Volvo operated by Susan R. Rider, of Fulton. Deputies responded to the accident near the intersection of Route 34 and Munson Road in Lansing at approximately 6:50 a.m.
Rider was airlifted to Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira. No information was available Tuesday. Orofino was airlifted to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. He was listed in serious condition Tuesday afternoon.
Faculty union sues health commission
The union that represents SUNY Upstate Medical University faculty has filed a lawsuit against the legal requirement that the university, along with its teaching hospital, privatize and merge with fellow Syracuse health-care facility, Crouse Hospital.
United University Professions, which represents the 2,200 medical and teaching staff at Upstate, claims in its suit the recommendation is unconstitutional and takes over a decision-making role that belongs to elected officials. The suit also claims that the Commission on Health Care Facilities in the 21st Century's reasoning for the privatization of Upstate was not fully explained as required by the law that created the commission. The union also argues that if Upstate is removed from the SUNY system, its teaching and research mission will be jeopardized.
