Christian church still supports a higher order

Thursday, March 22, 2007 11:56 AM EDT

Thousands of Christians are praying and marching for peace this weekend. Some 37 church organizations are making themselves heard in Washington. The same is happening across the country. The church has long been quietly active for reason and peace, just one example being the recent multi denominational delegation to Iran for dialogue.
Politicians of course, might never say, “I am sorry.” But many of the clergy and congregations across the country are in inconsolable remorse about moral failings which have generated egregious bloodshed and heartache. The church apparently still supports a higher order and has not been completely co-opted by nationalism. The courage of Thomas More, John Wesley, George Fox, Martin Luther, Martin Luther King, Detrich Bonhoffer, John Wycliffe, Ignatius of Loyola and Desmond Tutu is apparently alive and well in the USA. Perhaps the apostles would not be ridden out as too radical after all. They might be ignored by the major media though.

The church apparently does ask more from its followers than that they comfort themselves, that they are the chosen. Standing up for justice, regardless of the cost, still seems to be a critical tenet of Christianity.

" PS Donovan, are you calling everyone who voted to protect the US a moral failure? I'd like to see a list of the clergy, or church leaders that have publicly said that their church is in inconsolable remorse, and that the politicians they support are moral failures. "

" I feel the same way as Chris. I think that we all want peace--no doubt about it in my mind. However, we have people who are of a different religous belief who profess that all "infidels" must be wiped from the face of the planet if they are to please their "god." Everyone has forgotten 9/11. Are we not sensetive at this point that someone entered our country, and murdered innocent people NOT occupying a military installation? Yes, innocent people die every day in Iraq. They are used as shields, killed, and in turn are used in propaganda against us. No one ever promotes the good things our service people do for the Iraqis. Ask yourself a question--do you really believe that our service people would intentionally murder children, women, and the elderly? It is war, people die. I also wish that our service people were here, at home with their families, but the hard reality of it is that they are serving a purpose in the middle east. We need a presence there to interupt the terrorist organizations. Do you believe that if left alone, the radical Islamists would not plan attacks on us again? If you believe it, you are ignorant. Its ok to want peace, but be real about how we get there---because there are just as many who don't want it for us. "

" Let me get this straight: You want to apologize for us defending ourselves? How about asking the insurgents/terrorists not to use women and children as shields or suicide bombers? Or ask them not to behead and defile prisoners or forcefully try to convert them to Islam? "
