State shutting down adult home

AUBURN -- The South Side Home for Adults will close its doors by the end of the month.
A number of uncorrected violations led to an order by the state Department of Health, department spokesman Joe Rohm said Thursday.

"The facility is closing due to significant resident care issues," he said. "The patients aren't getting the care and services they need."

State health department personnel will be on site through March 30 to assist residents and families in the search for other facilities. About 40 residents were looking for new homes Thursday.

Rory and Lisa McCarthy took ownership of the former Kalet Home, 172 South St., and changed the name in 2006. But now Diane Kalet, who ran the home with her husband, David, for over 30 years before that, said she was overseeing the closure.

"It's just a sad situation after all these years," said Kalet, who said she could not elaborate on her status or the fate of the McCarthys for legal reasons. "We'd like to thank the community, all the churches, all the residents and employees for all the support over years."
