Wipe out colon cancer campaign continues
In recognition of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month (March), the Cayuga County Healthy Men and Women Partnership is teaming up with Kinney Drugs to conduct a Wipe Out Colon Cancer campaign. The goal is to increase awareness of colon cancer prevention and encourage early detection of the disease.
The disease can be prevented through annual testing - a painless, easy-to-use test called the FOBT (Fecal Occult Blood Test). FOBT detects bleeding that may be caused by polyps (growths) in the colon. The FOBT takes very little time and is done privately at home. Polyps detected early can be surgically removed before they become cancerous.
Free FOBT kits, information about colorectal cancer prevention and a roll of toilet paper will be handed out to any adult who is age 50 or older, having no symptoms and due for testing, at participating stores. Participants will take the test at home and mail it back to Cayuga County Health Department. Test results will then be shared with each participant and his/her doctor. Participants will receive a $5 Kinney Cash Card if they return the test within a two-week period.
The following Kinney Drugs stores are participating from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the following dates:
€ Today in Moravia
€ Tuesday, March 27 in Weedsport
To learn more, contact Valerie White at 253-1453.
Learn how emotions affects the physical
How and where are physical, emotional and life symptoms anchored in your body? How do these symptoms create dis-ease in your body and life? A six-week awareness for well-being workshop will try to answer these and more questions beginning March 21. The workshop will be held from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. each Wednesday until April 25.
This class will combine yin yoga, and breath, mind, and energetic center (chakra) meditation, to help you gain a deeper understanding of the subtle energies that affect your health. This class will help you develop the tools to improve your relationship to your body, deepen your connection to your self and restore health.
The class will be held at The Center, 1 Hoffman St., Suite B, Auburn. Cost is $120.
To register, call 704-0319 or e-mail mah@TheCenter4Wellness.com.
Teleconference to be offered on grief
Hospice of the Finger Lakes and Cayuga Community College will offer the Hospice Foundation of America's 14th annual teleconference “Living with Grief Before and After Death” from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Thursday, March 22, in room 207 at CCC, 197 Franklin St., Auburn.
The teleconference will explore the most current theoretical perspectives on loss and grief as experienced by persons throughout a life- limiting illness and by survivors after the death. The panel will focus on areas where understandings of grief have been challenged. The program will be useful to a range of professionals who provide bereavement counseling or work with the bereaved. The information will also be helpful to individuals who offer education on loss, grief, dying or death.
This program is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required. To register, contact Matthew P. Binkewicz at 255-2733.
