Hoyt takes sole responsibility for the music he makes

Syracuse-area folk singer and songwriter Larry Hoyt, whose CD is featured at Hondo Mesa Records, is well known in the area for his work with the local 88.3 Syracuse folk radio show, “Common Threads.”

In the beginning stages of finding his niche as an acoustic folk and country performer, Hoyt began performing at open mic nights about 20 years ago, eventually moving to performances at nursing homes, bars, daycare centers, coffee houses, churches, community centers and anywhere an agreeable performer was called for.

Accompanying himself with the acoustic guitar, Hoyt often has the lonesome twang of Johnny Cash, though he sometimes performs with fiddler Henry Janiewicz and mandolin player Ed Van Cott.

“I compare playing solo with being a stand-up comedian - there's no safety net, there's no one else to pick up the slack, there's no one else to blame. Working as a solo artist keeps one on one's toes, so to speak, although I usually do perform sitting down these days,” Hoyt said.

The set list for his Burritt's performance will include originals from his CD, “Folksinger/Songwriter,” which can be heard online at www.cdbaby.com/cd/larryhoyt. He also performs his own versions of songs written by Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Woody Guthrie, Tom Paxton and many more.

Currently, Hoyt is working on recordings for his second CD, but he is also working on bringing back his 15-year running public access cable television show, which features videotaped performances of acoustic acts throughout central New York.

Hoyt is, of course, still hosting “Common Threads” as well on Sunday afternoons from 2 to 5 p.m.
