Va Va Bloom gets things growing

Although the ground might still be too cold to plant flowers, trees or vegetables, it's not too soon to begin thinking about it.
Dickman Farms is helping with the planning at its Va Va Bloom event this weekend.

“This is why we hold the event at this time of year,” said garden center manager Kathy Bardwell. “It's when people start planning, everyone has cabin fever.”

Va Va Bloom will include three days of free workshops, how-to seminars and tours of the behind-the-scenes productions of Dickman Farms, said operations manager Kelly Husby.

The workshops and how-tos will range in topics from “How to Build a Happy Healthy Pond” and “Planting Solutions for Site Problems” to “The Beauty of Native Plants, she said.

“It was a cooperative effort among staff and last year we talked to customers to come up with educational seminars (customers) have expressed interest in,” Husby said.

When welcoming in spring, one thing to keep in mind, Bardwell said is that annuals cannot be planted until the possibility of frost is zero for the rest of the season. Living in the central New York region, that means mid-April or May.

Perennials like trees and shrubs are OK to plant once the soil is soft enough to break ground. All these tips will also be included at Va Va Bloom, she added.

“We'll be addressing just about anything you can think of,” Bardwell said.
