The Weedsport Central School District has announced the creation of a new alumni recognition program, recognizing Graduates of Distinction.
Where the district currently recognizes alumni for achievements in the performing arts and sports, the Graduates of Distinction initiative, recently established by the board of education, honors Weedsport alumni for lifetime achievement.

Nominees, living or deceased, will be mature adults who are or were exemplary citizens, having distinguished themselves through their communities, professions or careers.

Their efforts may have included service to humanity, exceptional career achievement or a lifetime of accomplishment in a variety of areas.

Eligible candidates will have graduated from the school district at least 10 years prior to being nominated.

Weedsport Central School will permanently honor recipients, who will also receive public recognition at the Weedsport Alumni Banquet June 16.

Nomination packets became available March 1 at the district office.

Anyone interested in nominating a candidate can also call the district office at 834-6637 to request a packet in the mail.

The closing date for submission of names is April 13.

" I feel like I am back in high school, Thanks for the good laugh. Please re-read what some of you are writing. Wish I could see your ages. "

" You know what? I don't get the impression Weedsport is doing any horn-tooting here - I'd say this article appears to reach out to anyone who might be a WCS graduate in a nominating position or the parent of a graduate. Alot of these post graduates are no longer in the area and I'd say this is simply trying to get the word out. "

" Don't bash WCS for being the first to start such a program. Every school district in the county should do the same. "

" I am an Auburn graduate but now work in Weedsport and think that Weedsport is not trying to toot their own horns. They are trying to recognize their community members for who they are and who they have become. It makes them feel better about themselves, and achieve what they are made to believe they can. A boost of confidence goes a long, long way! I would send my kids to Weedsport in a heartbeat, and will be mighy proud of it! No one is trying to belittle other schools or communities, but to recognize their own. So to those of you who take it that way it's you're own problem. Other schools should implement this sort of program. "

" You got were you are, because of a Teacher, your parent, your hard work!! has nothing to do what building you went to or what town you came from. Be proud of yourself and don't lower yourself to this childness "

" somethings just never change. Are you adults or kids writing this stuff. I am a graduate of WCS of many years ago and proud of it. My DAUGHTERS went to Port Byron and I am Proud of that also. "

" I am a Cato-Meridian graduate and proud of it! I have earned my bachelor's degree and a professional certification and am currently working on my master's. I have a wonderful and rewarding career and have contributed back to my community! As a matter of fact my children attend Cato-Meridian and are receiving an excellent education! See the article regarding Ms. Kitty Dates as an example of the staff we have educating our children! They really care and go above and beyond the call of duty! As a matter of fact, JE and Port Bryon have also produced some fine graduates! So - eat some humble pie Weedsport!!! "

" You know why Weedsport has always thought too highly of itself? Because it IS the exemplary school in that area. Their graduates ARE of a higher calibre and their teachers, directors, administrators have always strived for excellence. Look at the surrounding schools..Port Byron, Auburn, J-E, Cato...can't hold a candle to Weedsport. The people of Weedsport make that school district excel. See what 'whatever' wrote on 3/15/07? Obviously NOT a graduate of WCS. "
